VIDEO: Do I Seek God’s Protection or His Permission?
It is far too easy to fall into the trap of looking for God’s permission to do or act or respond when we really should be seeking His providential guidance. This is tricky – how do we tell the difference? How do we uncover what God would have us do in contrast to what He often allows us to do? Theme Scripture: Romans 12:2
How often do we as Christians look at our experiences, determine what God’s will is for us and then notice it just happens to coincide with what we want? It is far too easy to fall into the trap of looking for God’s permission to do or act or respond when we really should be seeking His providential guidance. This is tricky – how do we tell the difference? How do we uncover what God would have us do in contrast to what He often allows us to do? There is no easy answer here, as God’s does not set up flashing neon signs showing us the way. And no, He will not tweet you, post an Instagram or message you on Facebook either! Discouraged? Don’t be, because there is an answer. The key is knowing what to look for and knowing where and how to find it!
So, shouldn’t we want both God’s protection AND His permission? Of course! The problem arises when we go along through our daily experiences and come to those crossroads that create a legitimate dilemma. When we pause and consider which way to go, do we actually pause long enough to consider which way Jesus would have gone? Do we ask the question every Christian should be asking – what is God's will in the matter?
Either one of two end results tend to be true here. First and most commonly, we lean toward making a decision that best fits our personal requirements or comfort. We reason that it is a good decision – we are not going to do anything we think is immoral or lacks integrity, and that road we have chosen best suits our wants and needs as well. Now all of this may in fact be good, but is all of this what God would have us to do in light of our promise to always do His will first and foremost? Have we slipped into consulting our own desires instead of His? Are we dragging God along for the ride and assuming He will protect us because we are doing a good thing?
The less common end result is pausing long enough to truly consider the will of God before we actually decide what to do. By definition this approach is far more uncomfortable, and our own feelings and preferences on the matter are taken out of the position of top priority and replaced with godly principles and Jesus’ example. Here we are legitimately saying, "God show me which way to go and I will follow." Here God’s permission will inherently bring His protection.
Okay, how do we get this right in our lives? Check out our March 25, 2019 podcast, “Do I Seek God’s Protection or His Permission?” We go through two pointed examples of biblical characters who did things both ways. We observe their thinking, behavior and results and build the reasoning that shows us what is required to follow God’s permission first. Please don’t hesitate on this, as it is one of those “need to know” life lessons!

“Love one another as I have loved you.” The kingdom of God is at hand.” “Bless those who persecute you.” "Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me.” These are just a few of the profound teachings of Jesus, but how do we determine which was most important? Many Christians have differences regarding priorities as we follow Christ. Can we say that loving each other takes priority over blessing those who persecute us? Can we say that self-denial takes precedence over recognizing the kingdom? How did Jesus see and apply all of these things? Did he focus on one thing more than others? If he did, which one? Should we do the same? We do believe Jesus had one top priority, and we also believe his most important thing is also our most important thing!
Talk about a subject with a diversity of opinion! In the information-gathering stages for this recent podcast we found there were a wide variety of opinions on this topic. Further, these opinions of Jesus’ top priority were for the most part emphatically stated. For example, what could possibly be a higher priority than love? Jesus’ love for God and love for humankind enabled him to put his very life on the line and offer it as a sacrifice for Adam’s sins and our own. Jesus' teachings were deeply focused on love as well. He told us to love those who are our enemies as we are engaged in loving one another in the way that he loves us. Love must be his top priority! Perhaps….
What about the kingdom? When Jesus taught us what is known as the Lord’s prayer, he placed “...Thy kingdom come” right after he showed us how to address our heavenly Father. His teaching on the kingdom only began there. Most of his parables began with “The kingdom of God is like...” Jesus’ purpose for coming and paying the ransom price was to bring the kingdom to earth. He lived faithfully, died and was raised so God’s sovereignty could finally take an everlasting hold on our planet. Surely the kingdom was and is his highest priority! Perhaps….
What about the priorities of establishing a pathway for his called-out disciples to get to heaven? What about the whole principle of self-denial and the fact that none of anything here mentioned could have happened unless he denied himself and took up his cross? Here is what we do know - Jesus had several profound and world-changing priorities, all of which cannot be overstated. However, we believe all of these actually fit under the umbrella of one single overriding objective. This one thing not only was and is his "most important thing" - it is actually ours as well. Check out our March 18, 2019 podcast, “What Was Jesus’ Highest Priority?” for the details. We lay out the scriptural evidence of our understanding of the one thing that changes everything for everyone. See how getting this one thing in order sets everything else straight!

Theme Scripture: 2 Peter 2:7
Life is overflowing with opportunities, and I'm not talking about the big things that change your world. I'm talking about the small and often-overlooked chances in your everyday to refocus on the good, or to simply be kind or to elevate a conversation rather than diminish it. Many of our life experiences come from small decisions that are actually a result of indecision. In the Old Testament, there lived a man named Lot whose life was an example of this. Lot had faith in God and God protected him. In spite of this, his life experiences produced much sadness, folly and cause for regret. How did he get to such an end? He hesitated. He hesitated when it came to godly choices and he constantly did “almost” enough when it came to godly actions!
Life’s biggest problems really can begin with some of its simplest choices. When Lot and his Uncle Abraham were deciding where each would settle with their families, households and flocks, Abraham gave Lot first dibs. Lot made the obvious choice of the fertile valley for the benefit of his family and flock,s but he also made a much more subtle yet life-changing choice. While the valley would be a productive place in which to thrive, Lot for some reason was drawn to set up his tents right by the city of Sodom.
This city was a known center of evil, and yet Lot not only settled in right by it, he eventually moved his home into the city itself. Okay, so where is the hesitation we started talking about? Up to this point Lot did not seem to hesitate when it came to moving his family right into the lap of evil. Sadly, all of his second guessing began when it became evident that his home and city were destined for destruction. It was in this life and death context we see how the true challenges of Lot’s choices came to the front and how they end up costing him dearly.
Lot’s choices, in many ways, can represent you and me as Christians. Do we sometimes get careless when it comes to managing our interactions with the world around us? Do we maybe get too curious about evil and let it creep in closer than it should? Do we ever have clear and bold direction as to what direction our lives should go to stay safe within the reach of God and then compromise that direction? Lot did. While his life does show us faith, righteousness and God’s care, it also shows us double mindedness, desperation and a measure of depravity.
Check out our March 11, 2019 podcast, “Is He Who Hesitates Really Lost?” to hear the story of Lot and what it can reveal about us. Lot, like us, was a faulty and imperfect human who fell prey to his own devices and decisions and ended up rescued in spite of himself. Take this story to heart and learn what NOT to do!

Theme Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17
Sometimes we are called by destiny. Queen Esther of the Old Testament showed us what can happen when circumstances open the door for uncharacteristic heroism. In Part 1, we told the story of how a Jewish teenage girl kept her calm and found a way to save her people at great personal risk. She worked within the constraints of her ancient society to rise to the highest level attainable, all while remaining focused and humble. Her story has inspired people for centuries and left scholars to dissect its literary construction and contemporary significance. As with much of the Bible, there are layers of lessons to explore, and Esther is no exception! Esther’s story can be seen to parallel the walk of a Christian in thought-provoking and unique ways. What do Esther’s experiences teach us about our faith and our choices?
As Christians, we are given an amazing opportunity to follow in Jesus' footsteps. In order to do so, we need to really focus on the accomplishment of God’s sill. This is a good start. We then need to push our earthly flesh and desires aside so we can to do the things the footsteps of Jesus dictate. You and I both know how hard this can be, as there are so many moving parts.
It all centers on our human mind which is the control hub of everything. Success or failure is possible based on the direction the mind takes. What determines its direction comes from two opposing forces. First, we have our human fleshly desire which has always been our mind's most persuasive counselor. Opposing the fleshly influence on our mind is the “new mind” God gives us when we answer the call to Christ. It is driven by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. How do we push the right buttons and find Christian victory?
Sometimes it is easier to look into your own thoughts and experiences by looking at an external example. With a little creativity, the story of Esther actually plays this out for us in a spectacular way. Check out our March 4, 2019 podcast, “Is this the Moment You were Created For?” to see how it works. We take the characters in the story of Esther and assign them to be the parts of our individual Christian lives that are so vital to our faithfulness. We look at the inner working of our human mind, the influence of our flesh, the power of God’s Spirit and our new Christian mind all interacting. We place them all on a stage and we can readily begin to see ourselves in the mirror.
Queen Esther saves her people. She does this by listening to the wise and godly Mordecai, influencing the king and foiling his evil counselor’s plots of murder. This not only adds up to an exciting real life adventure, it also adds up to a better understanding of our own personal internal struggle to be faithful. What could be better than a drama that teaches us personal Christian conviction?
