Ep.: Are we really born with inherited sin? Aren’t babies innocent?
It’s understandable to feel that babies seem innocent, because they have never committed a personal or deliberate sin. They have no awareness of right or wrong, and they certainly do not choose to disobey God. In terms of conduct, infants are completely innocent. The Bible makes a distinction, however, between personal wrongdoing and the inherited condition we all receive through Adam. Even though babies have not sinned willfully, they are still born under the effects of Adam’s fall.
Scripture explains that when Adam disobeyed, he lost his perfection and entered a dying state. Because he could only pass on what he himself possessed, all of his descendants inherited the same imperfect, dying nature. Job 14:4 asks, “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.” This means that even though a newborn child has done nothing wrong, the life they receive comes from a source that has been damaged. David acknowledges this inherited condition when he says, “I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5). He was not describing a personal sin he committed at birth, but the imperfect nature he inherited.
The Apostle Paul teaches the same principle. In Romans 5:12 he explains that sin and death entered the world through one man, and that death passed upon all because all were in Adam when he fell. In 1 Corinthians 15:22 he summarizes it simply: “As in Adam all die.” This inherited mortality is the clearest evidence that infants share in Adamic condemnation. Babies suffer sickness, weakness and even death long before they reach an age where they could knowingly choose sin. If infants were born sinless and possessed a perfect right to life, death would have no claim on them at all.
Being “born in sin” does not mean that babies are depraved or malicious. It simply means they are born without the perfect life Adam once had, and they inherit physical, mental and moral weaknesses because of the fall. Their innocence of behavior is real, but their inherited condition is also real. The only partial exception Scripture mentions is that children of believing parents are counted “holy” in a tentative sense because of their parents’ standing with God, but even they still inherit Adamic imperfection. See 1 Corinthians 7:14.
Because no child chooses to be born into this condition, God has provided a complete remedy through Jesus Christ. Just as Adam’s disobedience brought condemnation to all his unborn family, Jesus’ obedience and ransom sacrifice provide deliverance for that same entire family. Every child who has ever lived, including those who died in infancy, is included in the purchase made by Christ. In God’s future kingdom, all will be raised and given a full, fair opportunity to learn righteousness under perfect conditions.
So while babies are innocent in their actions, the Bible teaches that they are still born under Adamic imperfection. This is why they experience sickness and death, and why they need the Redeemer just as much as adults do. God’s plan lovingly provides for them, and through Christ, every child will one day be freed from the inherited effects of Adam’s fall.

Ep.: What evidence does the Bible give for Jesus’ pre-human existence with God?
The Scriptures present Jesus as having a personal existence in heaven as the Father’s son before he was born through Mary. He was then sent by God into the world, became a human being and fulfilled the work his Father had given him. Several passages contribute to this understanding and taken together, they provide a consistent picture of Christ’s prehuman existence.
The first evidence is found in John 1:1–3, 14. John identifies Jesus in his prehuman existence as “the Word” or Logos in Greek. The Word was “with God” in the beginning, and John then says that all things were made through him. (The translation “with God,” as appears in most Bibles, is inaccurate. The correct translation is “unto God” or “towards God,” meaning “pertaining to God” or “in the service of God.”) This presents two distinct entities: God the Father, and the Word who was with Him and through whom God carried out His creative work. Verse 14 then tells us that “the Word was made flesh,” identifying this prehuman Word with the man Jesus Christ, as further indicated in verses 16–18. Thus, John’s description is not simply that God’s plan or purpose existed beforehand, but that the one who later became Jesus was with God and subsequently became flesh.
Other passages give further information about Christ’s position in relation to creation. Colossians 1:15–17 calls him “the firstborn of every creature” and says that “by him were all things created.”
Revelation 3:14 similarly describes him as “the beginning of the creation of God.” These passages indicate that Christ was the first direct creation of God—the Father’s “only begotten son” (John 3:16)—and that God subsequently used him as His agent in bringing the remainder of creation into existence.
Proverbs 8:22–30 also provides a remarkable picture of Wisdom being brought forth before the earth was made and then being present with God during His creative work. This can be understood as figurative language pointing toward Jesus’ prehuman relationship with God.
Perhaps even more significant is what Jesus himself said about his previous existence. In John 8:58, he declared, “Before Abraham was, I am.” Through these words, Jesus was clearly claiming an existence that preceded Abraham.
In John 17:5, he prayed to the Father, “Glorify thou me with Thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was.” It is difficult to understand this simply as God’s foreknowledge of a future person, because Jesus speaks of a glory he had with the Father before the world existed.
Similarly, in John 6:38 he said, “I came down from heaven,” and in verse 62 he asked what his disciples would think when they saw “the son of man ascend up where he was before.” These statements indicate that Jesus regarded himself as having personally lived in heaven before his human birth.
Paul provides another important perspective. In 2 Corinthians 8:9, he says that although Christ “was rich,” for our sakes he became poor. The contrast makes particular sense if Christ possessed heavenly riches and glory before voluntarily accepting the limitations and circumstances of human life.
Philippians 2:6–8 develops this thought further. Christ existed in “the form of God,” yet humbled himself, taking “the form of a servant” and becoming a man. The passage describes a conscious change in condition: one who possessed a high position voluntarily humbled himself and became obedient even to death.
The cumulative evidence is important. No single verse needs to carry the entire argument. John describes the Word as being with God before becoming flesh, Paul describes Christ as voluntarily humbling himself from a higher state, and Jesus speaks of glory he had with the Father before the world existed and of having come down from heaven. Taken together, these passages lead to the understanding that Jesus did not begin his personal existence at his conception in Mary. Rather, the one who was born as Jesus had previously lived with his Father in heaven and was then sent into the world to accomplish the work God had given him.

Ep.1456: Can Christians Lose Their Salvation? (Part I)
Finding the scriptural truth about our ability to lose our standing in Christ
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: Hebrews 10:26
Every professed Christian acknowledges that they have been saved as a result of Jesus’ sacrifice. The big questions come after that acknowledgment. How is someone saved, is there a cost for this salvation, or is it a free gift? What are we saved from? Is there a way to lose this salvation or is it an unbreakable and permanent protection no matter what we do? If we go to various denominations with these questions we will receive a wide variety of answers. The challenge is, all these answers do have somewhat of a basis in Scripture. What do we do now? We look at scripture as a whole and find the recurring themes that explain how all of these moving parts come together.
Two Phases of Salvation
Part I builds a clear foundation for understanding salvation by examining what it is, how it works and who receives it. We walk through key scriptures to explain the difference between salvation by invitation for true followers of Jesus now and salvation by just and merciful inclusion for the world in the future. It also highlights the cost of discipleship, the role of free will and why only spirit-begotten Christians are on trial for eternal life in the present age. This groundwork prepares listeners for Part II, where the warning passages and the question of losing salvation will be explored in depth.
Beyond just a moment of belief or feelings of strong emotion, salvation is a process rooted in God’s calling. Those drawn to Christ now are justified and invited to present their lives as a living sacrifice, walking a narrow path of growth and faithfulness. Non-Christians can't lose salvation because they have not yet received it; their opportunity comes later in Christ’s kingdom when accurate knowledge of God is provided and evil influences are removed. Only those who are spirit begotten and in covenant relationship with God can turn away from their calling in this age. Understanding these distinctions is essential before approaching the more challenging scriptures addressed in Part II.
Key Takeaways
- Salvation is deliverance from eternal death through Jesus’ sacrifice.
- God’s calling now is selective and leads to justification and discipleship.
- Present salvation requires offering one’s life as a living sacrifice.
- Only Christians who have received the holy spirit are on trial for eternal life today.
- The world’s salvation comes later under Christ’s kingdom conditions.

Ep.1455: What Big Lessons Can We Learn from the Little Book of 3 John?
Learning to understand and cope with challenges facing our church lives
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: 3 John 1:4
Some of the most significant lessons can come from the smallest things. The Bible is a big book made up of 66 books. The shortest of those 66 books is the book of 3rd John. This letter consisting of less than 300 words, was written to a Christian named Gaius. John describes him as a disciple whose life and example are truly Christlike. John then sharply contrasts him with another Christian leader whose example is exactly the opposite as he seemingly dominates those around him. As John ends this letter, he brings in the example of a third Christian as a contrast for Gaius to observe. These three examples show us the depths of Christian character, the power of biblical truth, the danger of mixing pride and power in with discipleship and the impact of leading by example.
Gaius
After introducing Gaius as a model of truth and love, this episode walks through how John builds his encouragement by pointing to Gaius’ consistent, observable faithfulness. The brethren testified that Gaius “walked in truth,” meaning his convictions shaped every part of his life. His hospitality toward traveling Christians was a tangible expression of the gospel itself. In the early church, believers depended on one another for lodging, meals and safety, and Gaius’ generosity became a witness others carried home. John reminds us that supporting faithful workers makes us “fellow workers with the truth,” sharing in the synergy of the gospel even when our roles differ.
Diotrephes
The tone shifts sharply when John introduces Diotrephes, a leader whose pride disrupted the church. He refused apostolic authority, spread malicious accusations, rejected visiting brethren, and even expelled those who tried to show hospitality. Our conversation highlights how John contrasts Diotrephes’ self‑promotion with the humility of the apostles, who consistently presented themselves as servants rather than rulers. John’s warning is clear: craving position and prominence undermines the very truth the church is called to uphold.
Demetrius
To guide Gaius through this challenge, John presents a third example—Demetrius. He is described as having a strong testimony from everyone, from the truth itself, and from John personally. Though the letter never explicitly instructs replacing Diotrephes, the implication is unmistakable: rely on those whose character aligns with Christ. Demetrius’ consistency between message and conduct shows what trustworthy leadership looks like.
John closes by urging Gaius to imitate what is good, reject what is evil, and continue strengthening the body of Christ through truth, love and service. His fatherly tone reminds us that even small letters can carry profound guidance for church life today. There are many lessons from 3 John!
Key Takeaways
- Gaius models truth, love and tangible hospitality.
- Diotrephes reveals the danger of prideful, controlling leadership.
- Demetrius provides a trustworthy pattern of Christlike character.
- John urges believers to imitate good, reject evil and support gospel work.

Ep.: What does Isaiah 49:3-6 mean? (restoration of Israel)
Isaiah 49 is part of a prophecy about the restoration of Israel. When God, through Moses, gave Israel the opportunity to become His chosen people (Exodus 19:5-6), they agreed to follow God’s commandments (Exodus 19:8). Chief among these commandments was that they needed to abandon any worship of idols and false gods and only worship God (Exodus 20:2). Over the subsequent generations, the people of Israel repeatedly broke this commandment, as recorded throughout 1 and 2 Kings. Some examples of this are in 1 Kings 12:28-33, 1 Kings 15:25-26, 1 Kings 15:33-34, 1 Kings 14:22-24 and 1 Kings 15:1-3.
God warned Israel that He would punish them for their disobedience by dissolving their nation and scattering their people throughout the world (Leviticus 26:14-33, for example). However, God did not intend this punishment to be permanent, and when the period of their punishment eventually elapsed, God would gather the scattered people and oversee the reformation of their nation (Isaiah 43:1-7, for example). Isaiah 49 is a prophecy about this time of national restoration. The prophecy uses phrases such as “the Lord hath called me from the womb” in verse 1 and “saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant” in verse 5 to perhaps help convey the sense that the restoration of Israel has always been part of God’s plan, before the prophet was even born. God’s words about gathering Israel to Him in the second half of verse 5 were a reassurance to the people that although the punishment would be harsh and seem long, His disfavor would not be eternal.
The first part of the verse 6, “it is too light a thing” means that although providing salvation and restoration for Israel will be miraculous, God is willing and capable to perform an even greater act of restoration. By including “the Gentiles” in His words, God’s promise of restoration is extended to cover all mankind. This is reinforced by the end of the verse which prophesizes “salvation unto the end of the earth.” What a comforting and inspiring thought it is that God, the wise, loving, just and powerful Creator of all things, has always planned for the salvation of all mankind!

Ep.1454: Can Death and Hope Actually Work Together?
Tracing how God allows death to precede renewal and hope to benefit all
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: John 12;24
When we look at the world around us and the powerful influences of darkness and evil that dominate it, we can easily get discouraged. Why would God allow so much to be so wrong for so long? Thinking about faith is helpful, but it doesn’t alleviate the nagging questions about how darkness and sin seem to always be winning. So... what if. What if we apply our faith to a broader perspective and look at the world’s history as the beginnings of an eternal plan for all of humanity? What if we mark specific cycles of this history as steps God is having His human family take? What if each step in God’s plan after Adam and Eve were created is marked by death, and that death would bring the seeds of renewal and hope for the next step? What if this process shows us the mind, power, love and mercy of God?
In a world overshadowed by darkness and discouragement, this episode explores how death and hope in God’s plan actually work together. By tracing the major turning points of human history—from Eden to the present—we reveal how each ending becomes a God‑designed beginning, planting the seeds of renewal, purpose and eternal hope.
God's plan moves forward
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly uses the pattern of death followed by renewal to move His plan forward. The first recorded death—an animal sacrificed to clothe Adam and Eve—signaled the beginning of life in a fallen world. The catastrophic death of the pre‑Flood world opened the door for Noah to carry hope into a new age. The death of Jacob ended the era of the patriarchs and ushered in God’s work with the nation of Israel. Joseph’s death preceded Israel’s bondage, yet it set the stage for Moses to lead them into freedom and the Law Covenant. Ultimately, the most profound death—Jesus’ willing sacrifice—became the foundation of the Gospel Age and the promise that all the families of the earth will be blessed.
Each ending in God’s plan is not a failure but a transition. Death closes one chapter so renewal can begin the next, always moving humanity closer to God’s eternal purpose.
Key Takeaways
- God’s plan unfolds in ages, each ending with a significant death.
- Every age ending death in Scripture opens the door to renewal and hope.
- Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and Jesus each carry the torch of renewal forward.
- Jesus’ death is the ultimate turning point, guaranteeing hope for all humanity.
- God’s foresight ensures that every ending is part of His purposeful, unfolding design.

Ep.: Is it a sin to be rich?
Money is important to live, but just how important should it be? Some people say that being a good Christian means that God will automatically bless you with riches, but this is not true. Jesus and his apostles owned very few possessions, and they never taught that a Christian’s life would be carefree and filled with earthly wealth – often it’s just the opposite.
However, being rich is NOT a sin – as long as we have the right values. A value is something that’s important to us. Today we’re surrounded by messages that having lots of money and things should be important to us. In 1 Timothy 6:10 the Apostle Paul says, “For a love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” Paul is NOT saying money itself is bad; he’s warning that loving money too much – making it a priority – can easily lead us away from God.
In Matthew 6:19-21 Jesus said, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” He meant that earthly wealth is temporary and can be lost at any time. On the other hand, spending our time and energy on heavenly treasures is far more valuable and will be safe forever!
Here are some examples of heavenly treasures:
- increasing our love for God and Jesus
- learning more about God’s character
- doing our best to follow Jesus’ examples
- helping others
- studying the Bible
- spending more time in prayer
But don’t we need money to live? Of course! Even though we want our hearts to be spiritually focused, we’re still responsible for earthly duties. So, money IS needed to live, but we shouldn’t prioritize having lots of money or things over our relationship with God. And if we do have earthly wealth, it’s best to use it in God’s service, like being generous to others and helping those in need.
So, is having lots of money a sin? No, as long as we prioritize spiritual things ahead of earthly things. We need money to live and take care of our families, but true wealth is found in living a God-honoring life, following His righteous principles. In Matthew 6:24 Jesus wisely explained, “…You cannot serve God and wealth.”
Let’s remember that spiritual growth is a more valuable treasure than earthly success!

Ep.: Why would God create us if He knew we would just die?
God did not create humanity with the intention of having us die; His original purpose was for mankind to live eternally in a perfect relationship with Him on a perfected earth (Genesis 1:26–28; Psalm 115:16).
When God finished His creation, He declared it “very good,” meaning it was flawless, without pain, disease or death (Genesis 1:31). Humanity was designed to be the pinnacle of earthly creation, made in God’s own image to rule over and care for the planet forever (Genesis 1:26–28).
The introduction of death was not a design flaw but the result of a rebellion that began in the spiritual realm. Lucifer, a high-ranking spirit being known as a “morning star,” was originally appointed by God as an “anointed cherub” to protect the Garden of Eden (Isaiah 14:12–14; Ezekiel 28:12–15). However, pride corrupted his wisdom; he began to covet God’s authority, famously saying in his heart, “I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:14).
To achieve his goal of personal dominion, Lucifer (as the serpent) used deception to lead the human race into disloyalty. He planted seeds of doubt in Eve’s mind by asking, “Has God really said…?” (Genesis 3:1) and then told the first lie recorded in history: “You surely will not die” (Genesis 3:4). He suggested that God was withholding special knowledge from them, making the forbidden fruit appear misleadingly attractive (Genesis 3:5–6). While Eve was deceived (1 Timothy 2:14), Adam made a deliberate choice to follow her in disobedience rather than remain loyal to God (Romans 5:12, 17–19).
Because God is a God of justice, this act of treason required a consequence: the loss of the gift of life. God clearly defined death as a return to the dust, a state of non-existence where there is no consciousness or activity (Genesis 2:17; Genesis 3:19; Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10; Psalm 146:4). Since we are all descendants of Adam, we have all inherited this terminal condition of sin and death (Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:21–22).
You might wonder why God has allowed this misery to continue for thousands of years. God is using this period of experience as a learning experience for a relatively short time compared to eternity, to teach an eternal lesson. By permitting evil for a time, God allows humanity to see the full, heinous effects of sin and the futility of ruling ourselves without Him (Deuteronomy 32:29; Jeremiah 10:23; Romans 8:20–22). This ensures that once the world is restored, the choice for righteousness will be made with full knowledge, and sin will never need to rise up again (Nahum 1:9).
The end result of this plan is a complete reconciliation of all things to God (Colossians 1:19–20). This was made possible by Jesus, who is called the “Last Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45). Just as one perfect man (Adam) brought death to everyone, one perfect man (Jesus) provided a ransom—a corresponding price—to buy back the life that was lost (1 Timothy 2:5–6; Romans 5:18–19).
Because Jesus was faithful unto death (Philippians 2:8), he earned the right to call all of humanity forth from their graves in the resurrection (John 5:28–29; Acts 24:15).
In God’s future kingdom, the “broad road to destruction” will be closed (Matthew 7:13), and mankind will walk a “highway of holiness” toward perfection (Isaiah 35:8–10). The Bible concludes with a beautiful vision of Paradise Restored, where God will dwell with His people, and there will “no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain” (Revelation 21:3–4; Revelation 22:1–3).

Ep.1453: What’s Wrong With Wanting What Others Have?
Understanding the spiritual disconnect of inappropriate coveting (Ten Commandments Series)
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: Exodus 20:17
We are now ready to address the last of the Ten Commandments that God presented to Israel after He had miraculously delivered them from the slavery of their Egyptian captors. We have seen many important and guiding connections between these Commandments, each adding to what the previous ones had given. These connections were profoundly important to the nation of Israel, as they created a foundation for their civil laws. For Christians, we appreciate how Jesus elevated these Commandments to become a basis for our spiritual lives. As we now consider this final Commandment, “You shall not covet,” we will observe how it ties everything together for both Israel and the disciples of Christ.
Coveting is the inward desire for what God has given to someone else—whether their life, relationships, status or success. Scripture shows that misplaced desire quietly grows into comparison and discontent, pulling our hearts away from gratitude, humility and trust in God’s providence.
The Tenth Commandment stands apart
It addresses the unseen world of the heart. We explore how coveting begins subtly: admiring someone’s life, envying their opportunities or longing for their relationships. These desires may seem harmless, but when left unchecked, they reshape how we see ourselves, how we treat others and how we relate to God.
For Christians today, the Tenth Commandment’s “coveting danger zones”—a neighbor’s house, spouse, servants, ox, donkey and anything that belongs to your neighbor all represent successful aspects of our someone else's life that our desire can easily be drawn to. Our danger lies in subtly drifting from appreciation to inappropriate longing.
Coveting is ultimately a trust issue
When we want what others have, we imply that God has not provided adequately for us. This inward shift can lead to jealousy, insecurity, pride—and even sin. The antidote is contentment: embracing the life, responsibilities and opportunities God has given us, while cultivating gratitude and humility.
The Tenth Commandment invites us to examine our hearts honestly, redirect our desires toward godly pursuits and rest in the assurance that God’s providence is intentional, wise and good.

Ep.: Why did the high priest in the Old Testament have blood placed on his ear, hand and toe? (Exodus 29, Leviticus 8)
The placing of blood on the right ear, right hand, and right toe was part of a ceremony established by God to dedicate, or consecrate, Israel’s priesthood.
- Blood placed on the right ear symbolized that the priest was to be attentive to God’s direction.
- Blood on the right thumb indicated that his hands were to be devoted to the work assigned to him by God.
- Placing blood on the right toe showed that he was to walk only in the path directed by God.
Together, these symbols indicated that the priesthood was to be wholly devoted to God and to the work of reconciliation.
This ceremony included the sacrifice of various animals. As part of the service, Aaron, the high priest, was anointed with oil. Afterward, his sons were also anointed as under-priests to assist him in the many sacrifices that would take place throughout the year.
This ancient ceremony of consecrating Israel’s priesthood foreshadowed the greater work of Christ in reconciling the world to God in his coming kingdom. In connection with this service, sacrifices were offered as sin offerings. On a larger and more effective scale, the sacrificial life and death of Jesus—and of his faithful followers—will be essential to the reconciliation of the human family to God.
Referring to Israel’s arrangement under the Law, the Apostle Paul describes it as “a shadow of good things to come” (Hebrews 10:1). He explains that the sacrifices of bulls and goats could never actually take away sin (verse 4). He then points to the willing obedience of Jesus, who said, “Lo, I come to do thy will, O God.” Paul adds, “He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second… We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (verses 9–10). The symbolic sacrifices of animals were thus replaced by the far greater sacrifice of our Lord’s perfect human life. Through this provision, full reconciliation can now be accomplished.
The symbolism found in Israel’s Tabernacle arrangement offers rich insights into God’s plan on many levels. We encourage its study, as it provides a deeper appreciation of the divine plan of salvation.
(The same symbols were used to purify lepers in Leviticus 14:14-17.)
