Understanding the depth and damage that Jesus applies to adultery
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: Exodus 20:14
As we continue our Ten Commandment Series, we are now to the point of deeply examining the commandments that directly govern our interpersonal human relationships. This began with honoring our father and mother, as a basic tenant for living respectful lives. Next was the clear command to not murder, and we found that Jesus, in his Sermon on the Mount, seriously elevated the responsibilities of that command—to not even be angry with, insult or degrade our brothers or sisters. Next, we examine the Seventh Commandment, “You shall not commit adultery." As emotional as it was to discuss how Jesus raised the bar for his followers regarding treatment of the brotherhood, this subject breaks entirely new ground for what is required of faithful Christians to live clean and faithful lives.
What does the Bible say about adultery? Jesus shows that adultery begins in the heart, revealing subtle forms of unfaithfulness that shape our spiritual integrity.
Jesus' challenges us even further
Adultery is often viewed as a clear, outward violation—an act that breaks trust, destroys marriages and leaves emotional wreckage behind. Yet Jesus’ teaching reveals something far more challenging: unfaithfulness begins quietly, in the hidden places of the heart where desire and intention take root. This episode explores that deeper layer, showing how internal compromises can shape our character and spiritual direction long before they ever become visible.
We take a sober look at how Jesus reframed the Seventh Commandment. His words expose the internal battles every Christian must face—married or single. Going beyond marriage vows, this is about the integrity of our devotion to God. When our thoughts wander, when our desires pull us toward what is not ours, when we entertain fantasies that erode purity, we begin stepping onto ground that powerfully leads away from faithfulness.
Spiritual unfaithfulness
This episode also examines how Scripture uses adultery as a powerful metaphor for spiritual unfaithfulness. Just as marital betrayal wounds a relationship, turning our hearts toward worldly desires damages our covenant with God through Jesus. By understanding both the literal and symbolic dimensions of adultery, we gain a clearer picture of what wholehearted loyalty looks like and how to cultivate it.
Listeners will come away with practical tools for recognizing the influences that can weaken spiritual integrity. Whether you are navigating marriage or simply striving to live a faithful Christian life, this conversation offers clarity and hope.
Key Takeaways
- Adultery begins internally, long before any outward act.
- Jesus expands the commandment to include thoughts, intentions and desires.
- Scripture uses adultery as a metaphor for spiritual unfaithfulness.
- Guarding the heart is essential for maintaining purity and devotion.
- Faithfulness requires both disciplined choices and intentional spiritual focus.

Becca Marten2026-05-20 12:25:572026-05-10 12:37:23Who are the “poor in spirit” in Matthew 5:3?Ep.: Should women be pastors?
Because we live in a culture that promotes complete equality in all roles, many churches have adopted this social standard and now ordain women as pastors or elders. The question we must ask is whether this practice is biblical. According to Scripture, the answer is no.
From creation, God established an order. Eve was formed from Adam and for Adam as a helper suited to him (Genesis 2:21‑22). The Apostle Paul directly connects this creation order to church leadership when he writes, “But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being quite deceived, fell into transgression.” (1 Timothy 2:12‑14) Paul’s reasoning is rooted in creation, not in culture.
This authority structure applies specifically to the church, not to society at large. Scripture shows women exercising significant influence in other spheres. Deborah served as a civil judge over Israel (Judges 4–5). In the New Testament, Phoebe is commended as a faithful servant of the church at Cenchrea (Romans 16:1), but she is not presented as an elder. Likewise, Priscilla—alongside her husband Aquila—helped instruct Apollos more accurately (Acts 18:26), demonstrating spiritual maturity and leadership within proper biblical order.
The term diakonos (deacon/servant) can describe a range of roles, but the formal office of deacon is defined in Scripture as male: “Likewise must the deacons be men of dignity… let deacons be the husbands of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:8,12). Thus, Phoebe’s service reflects devotion and responsibility, not the ordained office.
Even though women are not to serve as pastors or elders, Scripture shows countless avenues of meaningful ministry—teaching, counseling, evangelism, hospitality, missions, and leadership by example. God does not value men above women; He assigns different roles within the church according to His design. This position is not about limiting women, but about honoring the beautiful biblical picture of Christ and his church. In terms of salvation and standing in Christ, men and women are fully equal: “There is neither Jew nor Greek… male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

Does Honoring the Sabbath Apply to Christians Today?

VIDEO: Does Honoring the Sabbath Apply to Christians Today?
Ep.: Is it acceptable to pray to Jesus?
The general pattern of prayer in Scripture is for believers to address their petitions to the Heavenly Father, approaching Him through the merit and authority of Jesus Christ. Jesus himself directed his followers to pray in this way, identifying the Father as the ultimate source of blessing. The model prayer he provided begins with “Our Father, which art in heaven,” showing that our primary approach is to Jehovah God. We pray in Jesus’ name because we have faith in him as our Redeemer, remembering his promise in John 14:14 that whatever we ask in his name—according to God’s will—he will do.
Even so, there is no scriptural prohibition against addressing Jesus directly in prayer or thanksgiving. The Bible teaches that all should honor the son just as they honor the Father, and speaking to Jesus can be an expression of recognizing his exalted position and his role as the Father’s representative. Because the only way we have access to the Supreme Creator is through the merit of Jesus’ sacrifice, our prayers are acceptable to God only through him. Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). His resurrection to divine nature and his position at the Father’s right hand further affirm the appropriateness of honoring him directly.
There is also a practical and relational reason believers may speak directly to Jesus. The Church is described as the Body of Christ, with Jesus as its Head. Just as a natural body responds to its head, members of the spiritual body may rightly communicate their desires, praise and devotion to their Head. Scripture encourages us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and to follow his example of love and sacrifice (Ephesians 5:2). Devoted followers may certainly talk to Jesus as part of their spiritual walk.
At the same time, Scripture makes clear distinctions. It is inappropriate to address prayers to deceased saints or other beings, for Christ alone is the authorized Advocate for the church and “Mediator between God and men.” The Father remains the ultimate fountain of blessing, while the son is the channel through whom those blessings flow. For this reason, we should not address the son to the exclusion of the Father, for the Father is superior in honor and power and is the One who glorified the son.
In summary, the scriptural pattern is to pray to the Father through Jesus, yet it is entirely appropriate to speak directly to Jesus as well. Both approaches honor God’s arrangement, respect Christ’s role, and reflect the unity between the Father and the son.

Ep.1449: What Makes Christians Guilty of Murder?
Grasping Jesus’ higher meaning of the Sixth Commandment for Christians (Ten Commandment Series)
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: Exodus 20:13
In this Ten Commandments Series, we are looking at each commandment individually to see how they all apply to our present day personal Christian lives. In our systematic examination of each of the first five commandments, we have seen a powerful interconnectedness that deepens their meaning to us. The first three focus on God as our sole object of ultimate worship and loyalty. The Fourth Commandment to remember the Sabbath teaches us as Christians to rest in God through Jesus, making sure our motivations in life are continually spiritually focused. The Fifth Commandment to honor our father and mother was the first one to fully focus on our interpersonal human relationships. This respect and honor towards parents are the clear foundation for the rest of the commandments, which set rigid guidelines for the mutual respect we should have for all of humanity.
Murder, according to Jesus, begins long before any physical act. Christians become guilty of murder—"spiritual murder"—when anger, contempt and destructive words diminish another person’s God‑given worth. The Sixth Commandment calls us to protect the sanctity of life by practicing humility, reconciliation and honoring the image of God in everyone.
There's a progression
This teaching shows a metaphorical progression: anger places us in danger of judgment in court, contempt places us in danger of the high court, and calling someone a fool places us in danger of losing everything through God's righteous judgment. Jesus is revealing that for Christians, murder begins long before any physical act. It starts in the heart, where anger, contempt and destructive words diminish another person’s God-given worth.
For Christians today, modern expressions of this potential spiritual murder includes dehumanization, online hostility and the quiet killing of hope through criticism or belittling. Scripture consistently teaches that our words carry power to bless or curse, to build or destroy. When we diminish someone’s identity, worth or potential, we violate the spirit of the Sixth Commandment.
Fortunately, Jesus offers a clear remedy for this sometimes subtle but massive challenge. It begins with humility, reconciliation and intentional care for our brothers and sisters. As light bearers, Christians are called to protect life in every form—physical, emotional and spiritual. Jesus’ application of this sixth Commandment to his followers challenges us to look honestly at how we react, how we speak, and how we form judgments, so that our conduct reflects the value God places on every single human being.
Key Takeaways
• Murder begins in the heart long before any physical act.
• Anger, contempt and degrading speech place believers in spiritual danger.
• Jesus raises the Sixth Commandment to a higher, inward standard.
• Dehumanization and slander are modern forms of “spiritual murder.”
• Protecting the sanctity of life includes guarding others’ hope and potential.
• Christians must practice humility, reconciliation and intentional respect.

Understanding what true parental honor does and does not look like (Ten Commandments Series)
CHAPTERS
Theme Scripture: Exodus 20:12
The Fifth Commandment God gave to Israel after He freed them from slavery was a simple statement of respect. God instructed each and every individual to honor their parents. To really understand the import of this command from God to His people of Israel and to us, it is important to do two things. First, recognize that appropriate “honor” for one’s parents really has its foundation in the previous four Commandments. Second, be aware that while honoring our parents does have its basis in honoring God, we must recognize that any and all honor we give them reflects how and why we honor God. So, how and why do we as Christians honor our parents?
To honor your parents means giving weight, respect and value to their role in our lives. Biblically, honor is an external action rooted in reverence for God, expressed through respect, care, listening and godly obedience. Jesus modeled this honor both in his youth and at the cross.
It's all connected
In this episode, we explore how to honor your father and mother goes beyond a cultural expectation to a spiritual discipline. Scripture shows that honoring parents is woven into the very fabric of a God-reverencing life. The Law connects honoring parents with holiness, avoiding idolatry, Sabbath rest and the sanctity of God’s name. In other words, how we treat our parents reflects how seriously we take God Himself.
What if they just aren't good parents?
As reverential and respectful as all of this is, what happens when parents are not honorable? The Bible never asks us to blindly follow destructive behavior. To honor your parents must always be filtered through honoring God first. Sometimes honor looks like setting boundaries, seeking help or breaking cycles of harm. Other times, honor means patience, forgiveness and choosing respect even when circumstances are challenging.
Ultimately, honoring parents is a heart-driven choice. It is an act of worship, a reflection of God’s character and a pathway to significantly healthier families and communities.
