What is the business of Christianity? What are we here to do and how is it supposed to be accomplished? To cut through all of the rhetoric, what does it monetarily cost to follow Jesus – is it 10% of your income? More? How much of our Christian message, method and motivation is based – should be based - on our church's and our pastor's financial statements? As with any issue regarding Christian belief, there are countless ways we can interpret this answer. When Israel was established by God as His chosen nation, there was a definitive system put in place that actually supported the priesthood and the tribe of Levi. With such a clear path of tithes and support in place, many Christians firmly believe that we as Jesus’ disciples should follow that same path. On the other hand, many Christians believe that an entirely opposite approach is more appropriate. So, who is right?
This question is really all about giving
Who should be doing it, and more importantly, who should be receiving it? Many churches claim that tithing (requiring church members to donate 10% of whatever their income) has an obvious foundation in the Old Testament. Does it? Let’s do a tithing reality check. First, Old Testament tithing was actually land-based. God’s gift of the Promised Land of Israel was for their use, and God wanted them to “give back” from what they were given. All tithes came from the fruit and harvest of the land, and from the sheep and cattle which were nourished by the land. So, how do today’s churches follow this example? They don’t. I have never heard of any minister willing to take produce or cattle as someone’s contribution.
Tithing was never money
The next tithing reality check is built upon the first one. In the Old Testament, the fact is, no tithe was ever given in monetary form. Some may say that money was not used then, but that is simply not true. Gold and silver shekels were common. Why not use money? Tithes were based on the land! It was not only about giving out of your harvest and cattle, it was about appreciating the fact that you HAD that harvest and cattle because God had delivered the land He had promised!
There are several more very revealing tithing reality checks we could do. Let me just mention one more in passing. The Old Testament tithes were given to the tribe of Levi and to Aaron the High Priest and his family. All of those who received tithes owned no land. They had no inheritance. They survived only because they were supported by the people. Do the pastors of our day abide by this practice of owning nothing and having no earthly inheritance?
Check out our September 24, 2018 podcast, “Do Tithes and Offerings Belong in Christianity?” to put all of the pieces together. We take a hard look at the many Old Testament tithing details you never hear about. We examine what true Christian giving looks like and who benefited from it. Look, if you go to a church that seems to be all about “show me the money” you owe it to yourself to find out the facts!

Theme Scripture: Mark 10:43-44
,Leadership is a key to success in almost every part of life. When it is done well, those being led not only engage, but they have a tangible opportunity to grow and even be transformed. When done poorly, those who should be led can become apathetic, lazy and directionless. Now, we need to be careful to not confuse one who truly leads with a manager (one who simply keeps the wheels turning) or with a motivational speaker (one who excites thought but rarely incites action). Real leadership is a hybrid of these things and so much more. When it comes to spiritual leaders, the stakes are much higher, and unfortunately the results are often very disappointing. The Bible clearly teaches us what spiritual leadership is supposed to look like – and what is teaches may be shocking to most of us!
Sheep in the pews
Biblical leadership right from the start is likened to being a shepherd. As a matter of fact, God is identified as the shepherd of Israel who led them by the hand of Moses and Aaron. When you think about it, this is a phenomenal example of what the highest forms of leadership should look like. A shepherd knows his sheep, is dedicated to observing them, protecting them, nourishing them and helping them grow. A shepherd will put in the extra time, go the extra mile and put himself on the line for his sheep. There are great lessons here for any existing or aspiring leader.
Misuse of power
Many Christian leaders of our day fall woefully short of this example. Too often we hear of spiritual leaders who misuse the privilege through arrogance or selfishness. Then there are those tragic stories of abuse within churches by the leaders themselves or being covered up by the leaders. On top of this, many of us are completely unaware of what God’s design for Christian leadership is supposed to look like. This design is in the Bible but is rarely followed! Leadership can really be a mess!
So, how do you “do” leadership?
In our complex and demanding world, how do you gain trust, foster teamwork, inspire towards greatness and execute necessary evaluation all at the same time? One of the key elements to all of this is implementing sound leadership practices. Here’s the thing – leadership practices are not simply steps of development. They are habits of thinking and action that need to be adopted and engaged in on a regular basis. One of the six powerful practices is that of “embodiment.” This practice clearly defines the leader’s responsibility to be the best template of the organization’s mission, attitude and work ethic that they are capable of being.
Now look – there are six of these practices. True inspirational leadership, especially within Christianity, needs all six of them. Check out our September 17, 2018 podcast, “Have You Lost Faith in Your Spiritual Leaders?” We break down each of the six practices, compare them with some pointed examples of failed biblical leadership and then apply them within the design God laid out for Christianity.

Most of us have friends, but they’re not often really good friends. What’s missing? Intimacy. Intimacy among friends is profoundly valuable and also rare. Theme Scripture: Proverbs 18:24
BFF. Best Friends Forever. These three words conjure up an image of connectedness and loyalty that any one of us would want to be a part of. Sadly, it is an image that for many will only ever remain a thought and never become a tangible reality. Why is that? Why are so many of us on the outside looking in when it comes to true and profound friendship? At least one set of problems may begin with the way our social environment is structured. Social media actually teaches us to be acquainted at a distance, to be engaged without actual interaction and to be friends by clicking, posting, following or sharing – all done as we gaze into that little electronic screen. True friendship requires so much more...and true friendship returns so much more. Let’s look at some ways we can give and receive friendship – the old-fashioned way – person to person. It just might make your life better!
One of the first places to start is with Jesus as our friend. He actually called his followers his friends the night before his crucifixion. While friendship with Jesus is comforting and even inspiring it is also, well, different. Think about it – Jesus is a friend we don’t see or converse with. He is a friend who has basically told us all of the guidelines for being in his inner circle. He is above us. We follow him. Yet, his friendship loyalty and example often carry us through difficult times. He is a true friend!
What about regular friends? People we see and like and hang out with? Most of us have some kind of group we consider our friends. The problem is most of us do not consider many of this group to be our good - really good - friends. So, what is missing? Intimacy. Now let’s get this straight right from the start - describing an association as having intimacy is NOT limited to describing two people in a sexual relationship. Please, let’s think in a broader and frankly more mature way. To be intimate with a friend is to be able to rely on them in your deepest and darkest experiences. It is to be vulnerable, honest and loyal. It is the sharing of all that is good as well as all that is difficult. Intimacy among friends is profoundly valuable and it is also rare, so how do we find it?
One way the Bible reveals this intimacy is by describing those who co-labor. Co-laborers are vastly more connected than those who simply cooperate and the Scriptures are full of examples of this deeper step towards intimacy. Helen Keller said, “I would rather walk in the dark with a friend than walk alone in the light.” We all yearn for that kind of powerful and lasting influence in our lives.
Check out our September 10, 2018 podcast, “What Does True Friendship Look Like?” We talk about the three absolutely necessary ingredients that must be part of any truly close friendship. These three things give us a sturdy foundation for friendship, a method for maintaining that association over the long term and the glue that holds it together through the most severe storms. True friends...don’t leave home without them!

Theme Scripture: Luke 6:19
The fountain of youth. The cure for cancer. A magic diet pill. We would all love to have these incredible “miracles” for whatever ails us. When Jesus walked the earth 2,000 years ago he, in a sense, was a life-changing elixir and a source of quick fixes as he healed the masses. Who wouldn’t have wanted to be near him, for wherever he went, godliness, healing and wisdom followed. Fast forward those two thousand years, and even though Jesus is no longer walking the earth as a man, much of Christianity is still claiming and teaching the kind of healing performed by Jesus. Should they be? The Apostles and the early church were able to heal, so maybe we should ask why isn’t everybody doing it? Has something changed regarding Christian miracles and faith healing? If so, what and most importantly why?
The first question to ask is simple: Did Jesus perform “faith healing” miracles? In the Christian “faith healing” environments of today, the role of faith on the part of those seeking healing cannot be understated. The countless thousands walking away from those healing revivals who are still sick or handicapped blame their own lack of faith for their disappointment. So, again, what was Jesus’ expectation from those to be healed? The answer can be shocking. In the vast majority of Jesus’ healing miracles, faith was not ever considered or mentioned. There were several times when Jesus would say to someone, “Your faith has made you whole.” Count those instances and you will find there are only seven or eight of them. Now look at all of the times Jesus “healed them all” and you can estimate there were thousands of those. Jesus healed just because. His healing work was a “grace” healing work, not a faith healing work.
This should begin to raise questions in our minds about the proper method of healing. Jesus was known for healing the masses in the bright light of day, in public places and often in the presence of those who stood against him. Now, you might respond, “Well, that was Jesus, and we are mere followers so it is different!” Is it? Look at who the apostles and disciples healed, where they healed them and how often faith on the part of the healed was mentioned, and you come up with the exact same scenario. Healing was done in public, for the benefit of unbelievers and in plain sight of those who would oppose them. With these biblical facts in mind we need to be asking if this is the Christian faith healing works today?
What is the answer to these important contradictions? Check out our September 3rd 2018 podcast, “Is Christianity a Healing Religion?” for perspective. We not only establish how healing was done in biblical times, but we search out the reasons it was done. We then take a hard look at our environment today to see what is the same as back then and what is different. Christianity IS a healing religion, but it may not be healing in the way so many of us want it to be. Find out for yourself!
