Theme Scripture: 2 Corinthians 11:3
The world is scary in a lot of ways. There is an “anything goes” mentality surrounding us. This gives us the feeling there is no buffer between us and the dark, worldly or spiritual influences that exist. One of these dark influences is reflected in the rising popularity of satanism. When we hear that word – satanism – we may form a frightening, even hideous image in our minds of dark occult and bloody sacrifice-based rituals. This image is most likely a serious distortion of the truth. Does this mean we are defending satanism as a wholesome practice? Absolutely not! It does mean we want to know exactly what we are dealing with so we can understand how to keep ourselves and others from being manipulated by ungodly influences. Satanism is something to stay away from, but not for the reasons you may think!
Do satanists worship Satan?
Generally, satanists don’t worship Satan, or for that matter, even believe he exists. At the outset this can easily sound like a contradiction of terms. How do you build a belief system around that which you freely acknowledge is not even real? The answer to this is quite simple. Anton LaVey created “satanism” and brought it into the public eye in 1966 when he established “The Church of Satan.” His premise was not to promote the worship of Satan but instead to promote the personal human application of what Satan (a mythical symbol in his mind) stands for.
As Christians, when we look at what Satan stands for our conclusions will inevitably differ from those who want to emulate his principles. We see his multiple names described in Scripture and get a sense of his character. The name “Satan” means adversary – one who opposes another. “Adversary” does not have to be inherently bad, as opposing that which is evil is both necessary and good. In Satan’s case, the Bible tells us he is standing in opposition to God, the benevolent Creator of all things.
Another description used for Satan is “the devil,” which literally means “one who exposes to shame or blame by means of falsehood and misrepresentation.” If we are honest, this description cannot be twisted into describing a valuable characteristic that is worth following. It has no redeeming value either personally or socially. By just reviewing these two descriptions, our conclusion is obvious: Satan is opposed to the light of God.
Contrary to these conclusions, a satanist sees Satan as a pioneer, inventor and a counterbalance that creates change. Satan is seen as setting the social climate for modification. The satanist view elevates individualism and rational human thinking above all else. It sees Satan as exampling these things in his own story. What are we supposed to do with all of this? Check out our October 28, 2019 podcast, “What is Satanism?” for answers. We examine satanism and its principles. Then we measure it against what we believe are principles of true light. This reveals the subtleties and pitfalls to which we are all susceptible. Know what you stand for and against...and why!

Theme Scripture: Romans 8:17
How often do we hear of someone who just seems to have everything going wrong in their lives? They suffer loss, they have physical ailments, they are deeply distressed and their life seems to be going nowhere. Sometimes when we are that suffering person, we may begin to wonder, what did I do to deserve this? Is God mad at me? Am I cursed? When in dire circumstances these can be very human questions that actually have the ability to unravel our faith. We can easily allow seeds of doubt to be planted in our hearts which leads to becoming unnerved in our minds. Bottom line, if we weren’t thrown off by our circumstances, we can certainly be derailed by our reactions. Does God really get mad at us? As Christians, does He ever curse us?
Weren't Adam and Eve cursed?
Even though we may not think so, the idea of God cursing individuals is actually a strange one. I say that because when we look in the Bible to find a history of God’s curses, it does not read the way we might expect. Let’s start with Genesis and the serious sins of disobedience Adam and Eve committed. When it came down to proclaiming consequences God began with Satan. The deceiver was in the form of a serpent and God did curse him, relegating him to the dust of the ground. When it came to Eve and then Adam, he did not curse them. He punished them, but there was no curse upon them. God did, however, curse the ground because of Adam. This curse implied that the ground outside of the garden would not have the same natural fertility as the ground in Eden. Essentially, God’s gift of a life-sustaining environment for his human family would need much more of their own effort to keep them going.
Wasn't Cain cursed?
The same basic theme is applied when Cain killed his brother Abel. The only curse recorded was again upon the ground and not upon Cain himself. So, what’s the point of all this? It is to establish that God (while He does use curses in some places) is not some curse-happy Dictator who vindictively spoils peoples' lives when they make Him unhappy.
Now let’s go back to the question of our personal pain and hardships. God does NOT curse us with suffering. On the other hand, a strong case can be made that He actually is blessing us because of and through these things. Check out our October 21, 2019 podcast, “My Life is Full of Suffering – Am I Cursed?” for details. Once we firmly establish what curses really are, how they work and why they are there, we then address suffering. We open up how the Bible speaks of trials, pain and trauma coming from many different kinds of experiences. We look at these hardships, weigh them in the context of God’s grace and reveal His extraordinary blessing and providence in their wake.

Theme Scripture: Matthew 10:38
Most Christians will tell you that once you are called to Christ, it means you are called to be "footstep followers of Jesus." While this description is easily given, it is not so easily explained. How can we walk in his footsteps as a disciple when we are really nothing like him? He was perfect, we are not. He gave his life as a ransom for Adam and therefore bought back the human race from sin. We have no such mission or value. Jesus performed miracles and taught profound lessons. We can just appreciate his miracles and spend our time absorbing what he taught. So, what is following Jesus all about? In his own words, Jesus told us to deny ourselves. What does that mean? Are we supposed to live in a way that makes us never do what we want to do? The Apostle Paul said, "I die daily." What did he mean?
We usually think about loving Jesus and being his disciple as two ways to describe the same thing, but this isn't a complete conclusion. At one particular point in Jesus' ministry he was speaking to the crowds that flocked around him. Regarding being his true followers, he told them there would come a point they would end up on the outside looking in. Jesus explained their reaction would be one of shock and surprise. They would recount to him their interactions with him and their following along with him, but Jesus' response would be, “I never knew you!”
Are we followers or just fans?
This tells us discipleship entails much more than familiarity and appreciation. It requires a changing of one’s life and an overhauling of one’s most basic priorities. Jesus himself described the path required to follow him as a "narrow way," a way few actually find. His continual teaching and personal example regarding serving others, being humble and seeking God’s will above all else verifies this. What Jesus didn’t expand upon regarding being his footstep follower, the Apostles and writers of the New Testament did. Based on all of this, has our conclusion changed regarding loving and appreciating Jesus in comparison to actual discipleship?
Even if this is enough to give us pause, we also need to consider the basic question of how discipleship actually begins. Is the decision to follow Jesus an entirely personal decision, one that you might discuss with close family members? While this IS part of the discipleship process it is not the beginning of it.
Discipleship actually begins with God Himself. The Bible plainly tells us He is the one who decides who has opportunity to follow Jesus and who does not. This simple statement opens the door for a whole host of new questions!
Check out our October 14, 2019 podcast, “Jesus Died For You! Are You Dying For Him?” for answers. We examine what discipleship is, how it starts and how it progresses. We break down the basic discipleship decision, what true devotion looks like and how to access genuine discipline. Putting these pieces together reveals the mosaic of what a true follower of Jesus looks like. This is an image we all need to see!

Discipleship is costly. How does discipleship actually begin? Is it a personal decision? While this IS part of the decision process it is NOT the beginning. Theme Scripture: Psalm 116:12
Being uprooted can mean a lot of different things. It can be the onset of a disease or disability, the loss of a job or loved one or experiencing a difficult trauma. Maybe it is a change of location - a physical move or perhaps an emotional jolt that makes us reset our thinking. Being uprooted is by definition unexpected, unwelcome and uncomfortable. It messes up our lives! Christians might like to think that because we have God working in our daily experiences, we are going to be shielded from such things. This is entirely untrue. On the surface this might seem disappointing, because nobody wants to go through experiences that mess everything up! The good news is that uprooting experiences, especially for a Christian, can be some of the greatest tools of our lives!
How do we change a difficult, uprooting kind of circumstance into a tool for growth? While there is no magic potion that alters the reality of our experience, there is something powerful we all can access. Perspective. Perspective does not have any power over the uprooting challenges we may face. It does not take away an illness, cancel out an emotional loss or reverse a job change. So, if perspective can’t change the undesirable circumstances we are facing, what good is it? Turns out that perspective can, if we let it, alter our destiny.
Ask the right question
When faced with hard circumstances - even as people of faith - we often react with some bewilderment. It is easy to blurt out that age-old question of frustration, “What does God want from me?” We can all sympathize, as we have all felt this way at one time or another. Here one of the great hidden truths of life regarding the questions we ask comes into play. We can never get the right answers unless we are asking the right questions! It is in this moment where perspective has its power. Instead of asking, “What does God want FROM me?” we should consider asking, “What does God want FOR me?”
With this subtle yet mind altering change, we are suddenly looking for how God will walk us through an experience rather than wondering why he dropped us into it. We can now see the uprooting we face with assurance rather than bewilderment. We are acknowledging that God has a reason behind it. This is perspective beginning to shine!
How do we put this all together to have an impact? Check out our October 7, 2019 podcast, “How Do You Handle Being Uprooted in Life?” We walk through several biblical examples of individuals being uprooted. We observe how each of these uprooting experiences was different in the way they came about. They all had diverse reasons for happening. Most importantly we trace God’s “why” for these heroes of faith and how that “why” can easily apply to us as well. Uprooting happens! Make it work for you!
