VIDEO: What Does the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares Mean?
This is one of the few parables where Jesus interpreted the metaphors that he used. The parable is about the process of the development of the true church after Jesus and the apostles died. He warned us we would have to stay faithful in an environment of religious corruption and hypocrisy until a future separation work would bring to light truth and error. Watch this short video to learn more about the parable.

Theme Scripture: James 4:6
We have all seen arrogance. Sometimes it comes across as ultimate confidence and a sense of indestructibility and we might admire it. Sometimes it comes across as a cocky, self-absorbed perspective and we are appalled by it. The point is, whether we are looking at someone in their self-proclaimed loftiness in a positive or a negative way, we are still seeing an ego gone awry. Having addressed what we see in others, we now need to look in the mirror. Are we, in our blessed positions of Christian faith, arrogant because we believe that we have the truth of God’s word? Be careful with this answer, because in some ways it might be a trick question! Is there a difference between arrogance and confidence, personal pride and being pompous?
Let's being with our fundamental question - should a Christian ever have pride? The surprising answer is yes – and that obviously needs an explanation. In most cases when "pride" is mentioned in the Bible, the original Hebrew or Greek words mean "arrogance," "majesty," "conceit" or "bragging." These things bring out an image of one who is over the top all about themselves. No Christian in their right mind would ever see this as a way to present themselves to the world around them - much less to God. So, what about pride in a job well done or satisfaction in the progression of a task or treasuring the accomplishments of another? These things are appropriate, as they are contrary to the biblical meanings we just discussed.
The key to all of this is ego. Is what I am elevating a direct boost to my perception of how others should laud me and my influence? Or is what I am elevating something that others can appreciate and be inspired by? This is harder to answer than it might seem. If I have done a good thing in the sight of many, what are those who observe taking away from the experience? They see me as having succeeded in a great thing. Am I trying to fill them with awe towards me because I am so incredibly talented and accomplished? Or am I showing them the value of hard work and discipline when faced with a daunting but important task? These questions help us to drill down to discover the foundation of our actions.
Check out our May 27, 2019 podcast, “Am I an Arrogant Christian?” for answers. We talk about what provokes arrogance and give several amazing biblical examples. Each example has a remedy built into it. We look at the absolute need for leadership and examine the potential pitfalls that can arise for both leader and followers. We also delve into the most insidious kind of arrogant behavior. In many ways this behavior is shocking because it is not usually anticipated. We look at how it works, uncover the surprising ways it manifests itself and kind of people it affects. Understanding how pride gets out of hand and how it damages all is the first step to avoiding its consequences.

Theme Scripture: 1 Chronicles 16:32-33
The King James Bible says righteousness and judgment (although this word judgment should more accurately be translated as "righteousness") are the foundation of God’s throne. This picture language shows us that God does indeed judge everyone, and everything and His judgments are based on that which is right and equitable. So, how does it work? Does God have a “rubber stamp” approach as He looks at people, governments, institutions and angels that proclaims “Guilty!” or “Innocent!”? Not at all! On the contrary, God’s approach to and methods for judgment are varied and even complex. How do we sort all this out? Who gets judged when, how does it happen and what are they scrutinized for? How do we decipher God’s patterns of judgment so we can appreciate His unbiased conclusions?
To begin, let’s focus in on how God judged the nation of Israel at the time of Jesus. Here they were going along as God’s chosen people existing under Roman rule when this guy shows up preaching and baptizing. His message was, "Prepare, because someone is coming who will change your life." John was, of course, paving the way for Jesus’ own ministry, but he also was laying the groundwork for God’s judgment as well. He plainly told the spiritual leadership in Israel that God would cast them off if they did not respond to Jesus. Did they listen? No. Did God cast them off right then? No, but this did serve as a significant warning and was also a sign of mercy.
Jesus shows up and begins to preach, heal and draw crowds. Right from the start, the Pharisees follow, question, debate and judge. Jesus not only has answers for them, his reasoning on and knowledge of the Law is superior to theirs. Did they listen? No. Did God judge them and cast them off right then? No, but their personal experience with Jesus, his teachings and miracles for a three-and-a-half year period did build a significant case against them. At the end of Jesus’ time, they and their nation would, in accordance with God’s judgment, be proclaimed desolated.
What does this tell us about God’s judgment? While it was appropriately hard it was also appropriately merciful. Not only were they given ample time before they were judged, God also did NOT cast them off forever, for they were His chosen people and He had made a promise to Abraham that all would be blessed by those people.
God’s treatment of the nation of Israel clues us in to his treatment of all other classes of humanity. We find that whenever He judges He always has an equitable and merciful basis for it. Check out our May 20, 2019 podcast, “Does God Judge Everyone the Same Way?” for details. We address some of the many hard questions that arise about how God judges; what happens to babies who die and what where do people go who have never ever heard the name of Jesus. The answers make so much sense when we understand God’s judgments as He meant them to be!

Theme Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:5
There is probably no role we as humans play that is more taken for granted than that of being a mother. From carrying the unborn to feeding and protecting the newborn to nurturing the toddler to teaching the child, she quietly continues. From understanding the adolescent to challenging the young adult to supporting the independent adult to caring for the grandchildren, a mom simply goes about the business of building and enhancing life. She rarely if ever gets time off, does not get paid and often does not receive much in the way of gratitude. Yet she perseveres, driven by the deep and scarcely understood motivation of selfless, protective and cultivating love. It is time to stop, observe and appreciate the love, power and influence of moms!
We always seem to portray the classic motherhood picture as one of love and forgiveness. This is a true representation but barely scratches the surface regarding the depth of character needed to support such things. In our recent podcast we listed 12 qualities of a Christian mother (referenced from a third party), opening a treasure trove of insight. These qualities are not only based in the reality of daily needs when parenting but are also based in scriptural principle to equip anyone - be they a mother or not - as a sound nurturer.
The first of these qualities is to possess a keen sense of discernment. Simply stated, to discern is to be able to judge well. There is far more to this than one would initially think. Judging well means not only seeing what is happening but perceiving the surrounding circumstances and putting the whole matter into a manageable perspective. This is often something a mother is faced with multiple times in a day. Think of the intuitiveness one would want to have while raising an adolescent. On top of patience, a positive attitude and thick skin, a mother relies on insight. Does the description “she has eyes in the back of her head” sound familiar?
Alongside the observations of current motherhood advice we have the sage inspiration of Scripture. There are many mothers spoken of in the Bible. Often their stories seem to be “by the way” additions to some larger narrative. If we take the time and give attention to these sideline details we will find some remarkable examples of child rearing bravery, faith, insight and hope.
Check out our May 13, 2019 podcast, “Is Motherhood Still Vital?” to put this all together. We walk through the 12 qualities (only one of which we touched on here) attaching a real current Christian mom’s experience to each. We also examine the stories of five biblical moms who are rarely referenced to learn of practical ancient wisdom. When we combine current mothering experiences with scriptural history and example, we inevitably find lessons and direction that apply in all circumstances. Motherhood IS vital. Let's appreciate and support it more fully!

Theme Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
(After this, head over to Part 2 for more.) The Bible is a big, complex and deeply misunderstood book. It was written over a period of 1,500 years by up to 40 authors. It was written in three different languages. To make matters more complicated, it has been translated a myriad of times through the last few thousand years and has suffered the unfortunate treatment of being altered along the way by some of its translators. Many (especially atheists) have enthusiastically pointed out numerous glaring contradictions in its pages. In the midst of all this, we confidently proclaim the Bible is the inspired and harmonious word of God! Who is right? Is the Bible contradictory or can each and every contradiction be explained? Let’s get straight to it. There are passages in the Bible that speak in a detailed fashion of how the young man David slew the fearsome warrior Goliath in an epic one-on-one battle. We all know the story and never hear of anyone questioning its scriptural authenticity. But did you know that there is another text that says someone else killed Goliath? Now what do we do? Do we just say that other Scripture is wrong? If so, then what about the whole premise that the Bible is the inspired word of God? The questions can easily begin to mount as this type of contradiction is very attractive to those who just can’t wait to disprove and dishonor Scripture.
So, who killed Goliath?
To address this issue and the many other biblical “contradictions” some seem to advertise, we need to have a clear and logical approach. First, it is always important to step back from whatever detail is being examined and make sure the big picture is understood. Is the detail in question a primary factor of an event or an historical recounting done after the fact? In the case of the “who killed Goliath” question, the text appeared later as part of a broad summation. Could there be an error on the part of a copyist that gained credibility by simply being recopied many times? What about the words in the suspicious text? What are their ancient definitions and which one of those meanings applies in that particular context?
There are several other considerations to be aware of as we seek to understand such “contradiction,” including ancient cultural matters and different points of view by a given stories' reporters. Check out our May 6, 2019 podcast, “Does the Bible Contradict Itself? (Part 1)” to find out more. We address the “Goliath” issue along with several others. Follow along with us as we figure out what the issues are, how they got there and how to reason our way through them to come to a reasoned conclusion.
The bottom line for us as Christians is, the Bible IS God’s word. It is harmonious from Genesis through Revelation, and its details as they were originally delivered are in complete agreement on every level. Let’s do what we can to set the record straight!
