Theme Scripture: Genesis 3:4
October brings Autumn and Autumn brings a major change of seasons. Leaves brilliantly change color as they die, the harvesting of crops comes to its end and the colder weather sets in. It is at this time of nature “closing up shop,” this time of things dying, that Halloween and all that comes with it is celebrated. It’s funny, the origins of Halloween were based in serious concerns about the spirit world, and now it is all about fun, candy and parties. Some of the season’s most successful phenoms are zombies. Yup, Zombies. Zombies are supposed to be the undead. They terrorize the world around them with their hideous appetite and their contagiousness. What's the deal with these guys? Is there any possibility they could be real? Where has our fascination with the whole zombie thing brought us? Does the basic idea of the “undead” even fit in with biblical teaching?
They sure are old!
The first thing to know about zombies is that they have their basis in some very ancient Sumerian writings. The poem The Epic of Gilgamesh featured men being summoned from their graves and eating the living. Kinda gross but very historical. Now, just because something was written long ago does not mean it was real, and this story is credited with being one of the world’s earliest known pieces of literature. All of that being said, even though the idea of zombies is based in fiction it has garnered much interest and support. Haitian witchcraft-based Voodoo unquestionably states that zombies are very real, though their interpretation of how they act is far from the Hollywood renderings we have become so accustomed to.
Can zombies actually be real?
Can they, as the undead, literally walk the earth, beholden to some master of darkness as mindless slaves terrorizing others as they do their master’s bidding? Haitian Voodoo aside, to get to the core of this question we as Christians must look deeply into what the Bible says (or doesn’t say) about such things. The Bible explains much, not about zombies, but about the conditions under which “the undead” can exist – or absolutely cannot exist. According to Scripture, it can't be both ways.
The other factors in our zombie research have much to do with Halloween and its origin. While this may sound corny, it is really serious business as we find the whole being afraid of haunting spirits in the dark founded in another ancient culture – this time from the Celts. The really fascinating thing is that (according to Celtic tradition) the conditions of Halloween night were described in an eerily similar way that existence of zombies has continually been described.
Check out our October 29, 2018 podcast, “Can Zombies Possibly Be Real?” and put the pieces together for yourself. We follow history and tradition, pinpoint the similarities from different cultures and times, and then compare it all with the unerring word of God. The result is a resounding answer that clearly states the unequivocal truth about zombies, the undead, ghosts and disembodied spirits. You really need to hear this!

Theme Scripture: Luke 4:33-34
We really are messed up. Just look around and observe the kinds of things we call "entertainment," and it quickly becomes obvious that human minds have an unhealthy fascination with the powers of darkness. How many movies, TV shows and online series and stories focus on dark spiritual power? How many depictions of Satan and his demons do we see and shudder at? What’s worse, computer-generated imagery can absolutely bring these things to life. Once we begin going down the imaginary road of what the demonic world might look like and feel like, it is just one more small step before we accept this imagery as a reality that is kinda cool! News flash – there is NOTHING cool about evil!
Where do demons come from?
The Bible gives a pretty thorough explanation of their origin. To begin with, Satan was the first to rebel against God. Because of his mighty power and high rank, his rebellion not only affected the course of human history, but it changed the heavenly order as well. Satan drew many of the heavenly host to follow after him. They took their allegiance away from God Almighty and gave it to Satan. The results were devastating. Because he had the “keys” to earth and the human race (God had originally granted him great authority over this world) he was able to “let them in.” Though originally angels of God, many of them in their new loyalty thoroughly abused the privilege of human access. God then intervened and limited their power over the human race.
The limited power of these demons does not mean they cannot do damage or harm to humanity. On the contrary - they can and they do. Their influence has permeated many cultures and religions in countless ways, and they are also capable of possessing individuals. While demon possession is not a common thing, it certainly is a heartbreaking and damaging occurrence. Why would they do this? What do they gain from possessing and manipulating some poor soul? Power. Demons want to be in control just as Satan wants to be in control. Remember, they are restrained by God, and this means they no longer have access to the full spiritual might they once wielded.
Demons restrained?
We have referred to these demons as being "restrained" several times now. What exactly does that mean? How does it affect their knowledge, their living conditions and even their desires? More importantly, what does it mean for humanity? Check out our October 22, 2018 podcast, “How Do Demons Influence Our World?” for the details. The Bible gives us a surprisingly candid picture of this whole demon dilemma, and we take it apart and see what it all means.
This is not merely a fascinating review of supernatural power, it is a stern warning as well. Demonic power never has been something to trifle with. Many of us, because of the curiosity factor, walk further down the road of demon discovery than we ever should. Please don’t be that person. Learn what the Bible has to teach us so you can have a healthy fear and respect for the dark powers of this world. Learn so you know how to stay away!

Theme Scripture: Matthew 26:53
As far as I’m concerned, angels are pretty much a mystery to us. I think that we have very limited knowledge of what goes on up there in heaven and are just given glimpses of what angels have done here on earth at God's command. Further, we have no strong biblical reason to believe that we should be seeking out or messaging with them here and now. Yet, in their daily lives, myriads of people believe in identifying angels and communicating with them. Who is right in all of this? How do we go about finding the genuine “spin free” truth about these heavenly beings? Are they here on earth? Do they protect some or all of us? Are we supposed to get to know them?
The word for angel means "messenger."
In the Bible it is sometimes used to describe human beings sent from one person to another as an emissary. It is often used to describe powerful beings from heaven sent by God. The concept of angels from heaven coming down and being among us has captured the imaginations of many. When you think about it, the scenario is pretty fantastic. God wants to get something done on earth, or He wants to inform a specific human being of His plans. So, He dispatches a glowing angel clothed in white who speeds through the heavens with his mighty wings. He arrives and dramatically does the bidding of God. Is this how it happens?
Angels ARE sent by God.
How they get here is beyond our comprehension, but there are several things we can understand. First are the reasons for angelic visits. Each and every time an angel was dispatched by God in the Bible (and those were rare occurrences), there were always clear conditions in place and something specific was needed. That something had to do with the moving forward of God’s plan or with God’s care for those who served Him. That something was usually about protection, punishment or proclamation and nothing more than that.
Second, each and every time an angel came to earth from God, they did their work and left. There was no hanging around afterwards, there were no unnecessary interactions with humanity - they just left.
Having said all of that, we need to approach the idea of “guardian angels.” The Bible does tell us that they are real, but the questions regarding them are many. Does everyone have one, can we know who they are and can we communicate with them? Check out our October 15, 2018 podcast, “How D Angels Help Us in Daily Life?” for some answers and perspectives. We lay out what the Bible tells us about the hierarchy of the heavenly host, where angels fit into that arrangement and their role concerning humanity. We examine the common belief among many of communicating with angels. You'll hear pointed answers about the specific role guardian angels play.

Theme Scripture: James 2:20
Faith is awe-inspiring in its transformative power, reassuring in its calming ability and provides powerful contentment as we apply it daily. Faith is also one of the most misunderstood, misrepresented and maligned aspects in all Christianity. It is too easily confused with ignorant hope, and as a result, is easily dismissed by its detractors as a little fantasy in the limited minds of those who are believers. What is faith – really? How does it work? Is Christian faith the same as having trust in other people? Does it equate to the kind of trust you would have in a doctor or an attorney to act in your best interest? Are we given Christian faith as a gift or is it something that we have to develop?
To see how it actually works, it is important to pause and consider what faith is not. It is not gullibility. It is not wishful thinking. It is not emotional euphoria, and it is not magically planted into one’s heart and mind. These four things are what so many believe it to be, and they could not be further from the truth. On the contrary, faith IS belief based on evidence - not wishful thinking - but evidence. It does spur one on to hope based on that belief and is grounded on understanding and reason rather than emotion. Faith brings trust, and trust changes lives. There are Scriptures that tell us faith is a gift. This seems to imply that you don’t have to do anything except receive this gift and let your life be transformed. If only it was that easy!
There are three basic phases to its development. The first phase is being acquainted, and this is where the gift comes into play. Someone gives us the gift of introducing us to “the faith.” Our eyes can now be open to understanding the basics of the gospel. This gift brings us to a place of thinking and questions, and it encourages us to pursue the answers. This phase can be exciting, if acted upon, as the newness and broad message of love the gospel carries begins to be revealed. Here we have an opportunity to decide whether we are "pleased to make faith’s acquaintance" or would rather just move on in life without it.
There is a problem with faith. It will not flourish unless it is provoked to grow beyond the acquaintance stage. Unfortunately, many people who make faith's acquaintance end up living their Christian lives content to have been introduced and take it no further. In this condition, faith more and more relies upon feelings to keep it relevant, and that is a formula for failure. Check out our October 8, 2018 podcast, “How Does Faith Actually Work?” As we mentioned earlier, there are three phases through which faith must grow for it to be the life-changing attribute it is capable of becoming. Knowing these three phases can help us find the keys to living - truly living - our faith!

For a Christian, blooming where planted is about putting down our Christian roots in the life God gave to us. Theme Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:6
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence! As we go about the business of making our lives work, we can easily and frequently wind up looking at others around us with some level of envy. They seem to have it better than we do, they seem to be more stable or secure or more engaged than we are. These emotional and reactionary observations then give way to those gnawing feelings of “if only I had” or “if only I could” or “why does everything seem to always go their way? What we are left with is a discontented void in our hearts that yearns for fulfillment. How do we get there? As Christians, how do we fill that space with thoughts words and actions that are not envious or discouraged? How do embrace our experiences with a God-honoring and growth-oriented acceptance and outlook?
Even though the phrase “Bloom where you are planted” is NOT from the Bible, it does provide a great basis for framing our lives, though many today would disagree. ‘What if I don’t like where I’m planted?’ ‘Whose decision was it to plant me there?’ ‘What if I decide that a change is in order – I can just make it right? It is my life!’ Such are the misgivings of a society that wants nothing to do with being told what to do or how to do it! Let’s put the picture in order…
For a Christian, the idea of blooming where you are planted is all about putting down our roots of Christianity in the life God gave to us. Blooming is a result of proper watering, feeding and sunshine. It is a result of acquiescing to the will and way of God. This is such a warm and fuzzy picture that we need to trip it up a little, because let’s face it, life is NEVER that simple, calm and orderly!
What happens when instead of focusing on how to bloom, we begin to focus on the uncertain future and end up thinking ‘There’s doom where I am planted!” This is actually a common problem, even for Christians. It is too easy to look ahead and figure we know that what is going to happen is not good. We convince ourselves, brace ourselves and ultimately sabotage ourselves. This is a classic “anticipation without information” blunder. It makes us want to uproot and run because we have substituted the all-knowing wisdom of the God who planted us with the musings and misgivings of the plant itself! Kinda foolish when you think about it, and it’s all too familiar as well!
Check out our October 1, 2018 podcast, “How do You Bloom Where You Are Planted?” to find out more. We discuss several other "blooming malfunctions" besides this sense of doom – like, what if you feel there is no room where you are planted? Each and every one of these growth inhibitors has a clear and powerful solution. All of this truly adds up to a better and stronger Christian life!
