How Do You Find Your Way Through Grief?

Loss brings grief. Everyone hurts when they suffer loss and many losses are met with grief. The recent Florida school shooting brings the trauma out in the open for all to see. Yet, before and after that singular tragedy there have been and will continue to be countless experiences of deep grief that are not so public. For many of us bereavement acts like a disease. Its symptoms can be deep and debilitating, and its cycle is repetitive and exhausting. Grief stinks and yet is an important and even healthy part of our coping with our traumatic personal losses. So, how do we go about finding the healing part ? How do we know what to hang on to, what to let go of and when any of this should happen? Finally, what can those of us who are not presently experiencing a personal loss do to help those who are in such pain and anguish?

Is Suicide an Unforgivable Sin?

Sometimes we forget that life is precious and it is worth fighting for. When someone dies as a result of suicide, that fight has been lost. When we lose a loved one to suicide we might ask ourselves; have we become so entangled in the web of social standing and status that we somehow stepped over and ignore our loved one who was struggling with being able to hold onto the sacredness of life? Were we so absorbed in our own stress and schedule that we were blind to our loved one’s battle or did they do such a convincing job of hiding their pain that the whole thing was just a shocking tragedy? What happened to our loved one that they found themselves drawn downward into a vortex of torment and suffering so dark that they despaired of life itself? How do we better understand and cope with suicide? How does God treat those who take their own lives?

What is the Legacy of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection?

The life of Jesus truly is the greatest story ever told, for because of his life, all of mankind will also have life. The life of Jesus reflects all that is good and selfless in humanity. The death of Jesus reflects all that is courageous and noble and the resurrection of Jesus – well, that reflects all that is godly and loving. Jesus truly did leave us a legacy to follow. Today we honor his resurrection by following some of the legacy he left behind for us during his last day.

A few weeks ago we began to look at the nature of the soul as defined in the Bible – not as defined by traditions or mythology or different social groupings - but as defined by the Bible. What we found was the Bible clearly states that the soul – the being of man and animal - is mortal and subject to death, which is the absence of life. Why Do We Celebrate Death and Witchcraft?

The time has come. The time when candy becomes a dietary staple, kids stay up and are out late running throughout neighborhoods collecting candy, disguised as anything from Ninja Turtles, to Frankenstein to princesses to monsters to political figures, ghosts and aliens. If you are a kid, it is pure fun. But the older you get, the darker the source of the fun. At some point for many, this fun now takes on stories of death, darkness and devilry.
