Ep.1448: What Does Honoring Our Parents Really Mean?
Understanding what true parental honor does and does not look like (Ten Commandments Series)

The Fifth Commandment God gave to Israel after He freed them from slavery was a simple statement of respect. God instructed each and every individual to honor their parents. To really understand the import of this command from God to His people of Israel and to us, it is important to do two things. First, recognize that appropriate “honor” for one’s parents really has its foundation in the previous four Commandments. Second, be aware that while honoring our parents does have its basis in honoring God, we must recognize that any and all honor we give them reflects how and why we honor God. So, how and why do we as Christians honor our parents?
To honor your parents means giving weight, respect and value to their role in our lives. Biblically, honor is an external action rooted in reverence for God, expressed through respect, care, listening and godly obedience. Jesus modeled this honor both in his youth and at the cross.

In this episode, we explore how to honor your father and mother goes beyond a cultural expectation to a spiritual discipline. Scripture shows that honoring parents is woven into the very fabric of a God-reverencing life. The Law connects honoring parents with holiness, avoiding idolatry, Sabbath rest and the sanctity of God’s name. In other words, how we treat our parents reflects how seriously we take God Himself.
What if they just aren't good parents?
As reverential and respectful as all of this is, what happens when parents are not honorable? The Bible never asks us to blindly follow destructive behavior. To honor your parents must always be filtered through honoring God first. Sometimes honor looks like setting boundaries, seeking help or breaking cycles of harm. Other times, honor means patience, forgiveness and choosing respect even when circumstances are challenging.
Ultimately, honoring parents is a heart-driven choice. It is an act of worship, a reflection of God’s character and a pathway to significantly healthier families and communities.
