Ep.445: Are Palm Sunday and the Passover Related?

Understanding the type and anti-type relationship

Theme Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7

In the worlds of Judaism and Christianity, this is a very special time of year.  It is a time when deliverance is celebrated and liberty is proclaimed, for in both faiths events occurred that were both defining and miraculous.  For the Jew, the Passover represents the deliverance out of bondage and into a national heritage.  For the Christian, the Last Supper and following events represent their deliverance from sin into the liberty of Christ.  Is it a coincidence that these two events happen at the same time of year?  On this podcast we look into the amazing connection between these events – Palm Sunday and the Lamb, the Passover and the Crucifixion and the deliverance from Egypt and the deliverance from sin.

Ep.: Why did God Allow King Hezekiah to change when they celebrated the Passover?

King Hezekiah of Judah decreed that the Jewish nation celebrate Passover on the 14th day of the second month rather than the first month of the year as God had ordained (2 Chronicles 30).

The theme of 2 Chronicles 30 deals with the re-institution of the Passover, which had fallen into general non-observance after the reign of Solomon approximately three centuries earlier.

Immediately upon becoming king, Hezekiah commenced a great religious reform. In eight days they had reopened the great Temple of Solomon and cleansed it of defilement (2 Chronicles 29:1-17). Hezekiah then proceeded to offer a burnt offering, which with the offerings of the people, totaled 600 oxen and 3,000 sheep. There were so many animals that the priests needed to draft the Levites to assist them in the ritual slaughter (2 Chronicles 29:33,34).

All this reformation work took place just preceding the time of the Passover. There was one difficulty however in keeping the Passover. So much work had to be done that when the appointed day of Passover arrived, the priests had not been sufficiently cleansed. Additionally, they had all been so involved in the cleansing work there had not been adequate time to gather the people to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Therefore, Hezekiah was faced with a dilemma. Either they would have to wait nearly a full year for the next Passover or celebrate it late.

Although the Law called for Passover in the first month, the judgment of God was given that in cases of uncleanness, it would be permissible to keep the ceremony the fourteenth day of the second month. (See Numbers 9:6-11.) The situation in Hezekiah’s day was of sufficient similarity to invoke the application of that judgment.

After consulting with the princes of Judah, Hezekiah determined that the law allowed postponement of the Passover until the following month. In issuing the decree that Passover would be celebrated one month later, Hezekiah also sent letters to the ten-tribe kingdom of Israel in the north, inviting them to the Passover celebration (2 Chronicles 30:6-9).

The seven-day Passover celebration was such a blessing that those assembled at Jerusalem agreed to keep a second seven-day feast (2 Chronicles 30:23). Describing the atmosphere which prevailed in Jerusalem at the time, we read “there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon … there was not the like in Jerusalem” (v. 26). It is clear the celebration was pleasing even to God for “their prayer came up to his holy dwelling place, even unto heaven” (v. 27).

Ep.: When was the first Passover?

When was the first Passover lamb to be slain? Israel was told to take the Passover lamb for their homes on the tenth of Nisan (Exodus 12:3). Then we are told: “So shall it be yours, to keep, until the fourteenth day of this month,—then shall all the congregation of the assembly of Israel slay it between the two evenings” (Exodus 12:6).

This phrase “between the two evenings” comes from two Hebrew words: Strong’s #996, beyn, meaning “between,” and #6153, ereb, meaning “evening or evenings.” It is important to note that the Jewish day was reckoned from sunset to sunset, 6 P.M. to 6 P.M. our time. What, then, is meant by “between the two evenings”?

There are two views regarding the meaning. One view is that the first evening refers to sunset at 6 P.M. our time when the Jewish fourteenth day of Nisan began, and the second evening refers to when it became completely dark. In this view “between the two evenings” would mean it was near the beginning of the new Jewish day.

A second view is that the first evening begins at twelve noon when the sun begins to set from the zenith, and the second evening is 6 P.M. when the sun set, ending the Jewish day. Thus, “between the two evenings” would be 3 P.M., near the ending of the Jewish day. We believe this view is correct for several reasons, three of which we will state below.

  1. It becomes a type of the exact time (3 P.M.) our Lord died on the cross as the antitypical Passover lamb.
  2. The exact same Hebrew phrase, “between the evenings,” is used in Exodus 29:38-39 to describe the time the second daily sacrifice was to be offered. The Jews offered the first lamb at 9 A.M. and the second daily offering was at 3 P.M. This time of offering also typifies the time when Jesus was crucified. Mark states Jesus was placed on the cross the third hour (9 A.M.) and died the ninth hour (3 P.M.) (Mark 15:25, 34).
  3. Josephus, the historian of Jesus’ day, stated that the evening sacrifice was at the ninth hour (our 3 P.M.). When referring to the time Jerusalem was under siege by Pompey in the first century B.C., he writes: “The priests were not at all hindered from their sacred ministrations by their fear during the siege, but did still twice each day, in the morning and about the ninth hour, offer their sacrifices on the altar.” (Antiquities, 14, 4, 3).

The Passover lamb was slain toward the end of the fourteenth day of Nisan at 3 P.M. (Exodus 12:6, “between the two evenings”). It was then prepared and roasted during the three hours yet remaining of the fourteenth day, the fifteenth day beginning at 6 P.M.

It was the Passover lamb that was actually the meal that was eaten the night of the fifteenth (Exodus 12:8). This is also called the first day of the feast of unleavened bread. They were to eat the meal in haste, with staff in hand and all dressed to leave for a journey quickly (Exodus 12:11).

At midnight (of that same night when they ate the Passover) the firstborn were slain (Exodus 12:12,13). In Exodus 12:31-33 we are told the Egyptians then called for Moses that night and urged them to leave Egypt in haste.

In Deuteronomy 16:1 we are told they left Egypt “by night,” and in Numbers 33:3 we are told they left Rameses (where Israel lived in Egypt, Genesis 47:11) on the fifteenth, on the morrow of the Passover. All of this follows logically only if the Passover lamb was slain at 3 P.M. near the end of the Jewish fourteenth day.

When was the first Passover held by the Israelites?

Although the lamb was killed at 3 P.M. on the fourteenth of Nisan, it was eaten after 6 P.M., the beginning of the new Jewish day, the fifteenth of Nisan. At midnight of the same day the angel of death killed the firstborn of all who did not have the blood of the lamb on their doorposts.

Ep.: Does the Bible tell us to observe any holy days?

Jews were instructed by God to observe certain holy days: Passover and Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), Feast of the Trumpets or New Year (Rosh HaShanah), and the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).

These are considered high holy days and are still celebrated today by observant Jews. The death of the Passover lamb, which was a symbol of deliverance from death for the first-born of the Jews (and thus through them deliverance for the entire nation), was a type or picture of the antitypical Lamb of God, Jesus, whose sacrificial death freed His true followers and, subsequently, the entire human race from the bondage of sin and death.

Before Jesus was to die as that sacrificial lamb, he instituted the Memorial at the Last Supper. “And he took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying

‘This is my body given for you, do this in remembrance of me.’” (Luke 22:19)

This directive is reiterated by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:24-25.“And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way after supper he took the cup saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Our Lord’s Memorial, which falls on the day before the Jewish Passover feast, is the only day of the year that we as Christians are asked by Jesus to observe.

Why is the Memorial so important? Jesus affirmed that the bread represented his broken body sacrificed on our behalf and that the cup represented his blood, which sealed our pardon. By partaking of these emblems (the unleavened bread and the wine) today, we choose to be members of the spiritual body of Christ.

We are the prospective first-borns, the antitype of the Jewish first-borns who were saved because of the blood of the lamb that was placed on the doorposts. It will be through this spiritual body of Christ, composed of Jesus and his faithful followers, that the entire world of mankind will be blessed and saved from the curse of death in the future, just as the Jewish nation was saved in the Passover.

Many Christian groups have taken the directive “do this in remembrance of me” to mean that they may partake of the emblems (communion) on a quarterly, monthly, weekly or even daily basis. We, seeing that the Memorial celebrates the antitypical killing of the Passover Lamb, who took away the sins of the world, believe that it should only be observed on its anniversary. It is during the weeks leading up to the Memorial that we meditate on Jesus’ sacrifice and also on our worthiness to partake of the emblems in the hope of being part of the Body of Christ.

The Memorial is truly a solemn and holy celebration and the only day our Lord tells us to observe. However, we see no reason not to rejoice in remembrance of our Savior’s birth and in His Resurrection on the Sunday following his crucifixion. When we take the opportunity to joyfully recount the mission and sacrifice of our Savior with others we not only witness the Good News to the world, but we also receive a spiritual blessing as well.

What were Jesus' parting words of comfort?

Theme Scripture: John 16:33

If you were going to die tomorrow, how would you spend your day today? Jesus faced that very serious question 2,000 years ago. His answer was obvious. He would spend that entire evening with those whom he was closest to. He would prepare them, teach them and encourage them, for what was coming would be shocking and horrifying. The world of the disciples would be shattered, and he wanted them to be as ready as their imperfect minds could allow them to be. What he taught them that night through his words and actions was extraordinary. Even though it is not possible for us to get our arms around the depth of Jesus’ compassion, wisdom, love and clarity of mind, we are going to try anyway. What we find is pure spiritual inspiration.

Final insights before the crucifixion

The Gospel of John, Chapters 13-16 are a unique view into the heart and mind of Jesus the night before he was taken to be crucified. They represent a detailed recounting of the several hours that Jesus had with his most faithful disciples in the upper room and beyond. John began writing his record of these events with a specific introduction. He told us that Jesus knew it was his time to die, and even more significantly, he told us Jesus knew he was going back to the Father. How could he know he was going back to the Father when he had not yet withstood the horrors of crucifixion? How could he know he wouldn’t break under pressure?

It is hard to exactly determine how Jesus knew he wouldn’t break under the pressure of the cross. It is much easier to understand what he was doing with that knowledge in final hours of freedom as a man. Jesus used these precious final hours of freedom to protect and prepare followers.  He protected them by telling them of the trials they would face in the immediate future. Knowledge is power if we choose to apply it and the disciples were given that power. Even though they all faltered, the power of Jesus’ words provided a solid foundation for them to all recover upon.

The preparation Jesus provided was epic

He knew these individuals who were with him the night before his crucifixion would be the very foundation pillars of Christianity. So, he taught them. He taught them how to be leaders when he washed their feet. He taught them what the price of Christianity was by foreshadowing their coming persecution.  He taught them how connected they were through the illustration of the vine and the branches. He taught them about the role God’s spirit would play in their everyday lives. He taught them to love one another as he loved them.

These lessons barely scratch the surface. Check out our March 29, 2021 podcast, “How did Jesus Prepare His Disciples for His Death?” for more.  No group of followers were ever given so much to work with.  Join us as we uncover their lessons and join them in being prepared!

How did Moses' character and early life reflect what Jesus would be like?

[00:30:57]
How were the miracles that Moses performed similar to those of Jesus?

[00:47:58]
How were the lives and leadership responsibilities of Moses and Jesus uncannily similar?

Theme Scripture: Deuteronomy 18:15

Two of the most dramatic lives recorded in the Bible belong to Moses and Jesus. The heroics of Moses life extended over a lifetime of 120 years, whereas Jesus’ heroics were all accomplished within a 33-year lifetime. Despite the dramatic time differences, there are startling similarities between these two deliverers. Moses’ life was recorded and detailed in four Old Testament books of the Bible. Jesus' life was recorded and detailed in four New Testament books. Both of them were plainly or prophetically referenced throughout the entire Bible. They each executed the two greatest deliverances in the history of mankind – Moses walked his people out of Egypt, and Jesus ransomed the entire human race from sin. This all just scratches the surface! As we look into specific events of Moses' life as deliverer of a nation, we will see inspiring revelations into the life of Jesus as deliverer of the world. Comparing Moses to Jesus makes for a revealing Bible study, as there is an extensive list of striking similarities between the two.

The Bible points to comparisons

Moses told Israel there would come a prophet from among them who would be like him. The Bible unequivocally tells us he was speaking about Jesus. This revelation by Moses invites us to investigate the significant comparisons between these two leaders. By Moses prophesying that Jesus would be like him, it stands to reason that Moses' life would a be pattern for Jesus’ life. Sure enough, we find that the similarities from the beginning to the end of these two lives are staggering.

For example, think about the simple comparisons between these two lives in relation to their birth and infancy. Both Moses and Jesus were born at times when Israel was not a free nation. They were both were born to parents who were faithful to God. As infants, both of their lives were under threat by the present governing powers of their time. Even though Moses was raised as an Egyptian prince, his birth parents had a powerful influence on him. Parenting and nurturing a deliverer is no easy task, and God chose parents who were up to the task. Moses grew up, left Egypt and renounced his Egyptian upbringing. Jesus was taken to Egypt for protection from Herod and literally came out of Egypt just as Moses did.

Check out our February 1, 2021 podcast, “What Does Moses the Deliverer Teach Us About Jesus?” for more. We compare the characters of Moses and Jesus and look at their leadership. This episode even includes a comparison of some of the miracles they each performed.

Why would God tell us so much about Jesus by way of Moses’ experiences?

There are many reasons, not the least of which is to remind us that God always had a plan. God foreshadowed the actions and responses of Jesus as the world’s savior in Moses’ life as deliverer of Israel.  The message here is one of great comfort. God has everything in His ultimate control. He does not need to make things up as He goes; rather, He creates His plan and watches it unfold!

Theme Scripture: Luke 24:5-6

Easter Sunday is a widely celebrated holiday. It is a day that represents life. For Christians, it represents life in its highest form because it is about the resurrection of Jesus. It is far too easy to lose the deep meaning of Jesus’ sacrifice and victory in the commotion and fanfare of Easter eggs, the Easter Bunny and Easter chocolate. As Christians, we know Jesus’ resurrection was a world-changing experience, but was it a personal, life-changing experience for me? How does the fact of Jesus being in heaven again with God affect me every day? To trace the kind of changes his resurrection can have on us, we need to look at the kind of effect it had on some who were there and experienced it first-hand. What did they see? What did they change?

Being a witness to the most sensational events in human history has to have an impact! Never in the experience of mankind had anyone ever been killed, raised from the dead and come back as a being with spiritual powers. Further, no one else had ever walked among others and then was raised to heaven before many witnesses. In this episode, we highlighted the experiences of a few who were there for the whole thing. They were followers of Jesus, they saw the crucifixion, they heard about the empty tomb and they had encounters with the risen Lord. In a very short period, their faith went from shattered to sure.

The road to Emmaus

Just one of theses examples is the account of the two disciples walking to Emmaus on the day Jesus’ tomb was discovered to be empty. Sad and confused, they walked that seven-mile trek and tried to piece together the crucifixion with their dashed hopes for the future. As the story relates, a stranger observed their sorrow and began to walk along with them. He shared prophecies and reasoning that helped then to see these events as God’s will. We know that this stranger was Jesus himself, but their eyes were initially shielded from that truth. Once they found out, their lives were changed!

What about me?

Even though I wasn’t there to physically witness these events, I am here now to be a spiritual witness to these things. What kind of changes can I see in myself as I embrace the reality of Jesus being raised? He is now at the right hand of God, so where does that put me? Has my life been clearly and outwardly transformed as a result of what I see?

Check out our April 13, 2020 podcast, “Jesus is Raised. How Does that Change Me?” for more. We continue to break down the story of the road to Emmaus as well as several others. How did Jesus ease his followers into acceptance of his miraculous resurrection? How did they grow and respond as a result? And again, what about me? How can I daily learn to live Jesus’ resurrection?

Theme Scripture: John 13:1

What comes to mind when you think about the Last Supper?  Perhaps you envision the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting which captures the moment Jesus revealed there was a traitor in their midst. Maybe you focus on Jesus helping his apostles to prepare for the trauma of his coming crucifixion. Perhaps you dwell on Jesus washing his follower’s feet, or maybe it comes down to the simple ritual he asked them to keep in remembrance of him.  The fact is, the events of those few hours give us a profoundly deep glimpse into the heart and mind of Jesus and his overwhelming loyalty to those who followed him.  As we find with any biblical account, there are details buried within the story telling of the four Gospels that make these events come alive on a level a quick reading would overlook.

The first details that seem to be easily overlooked are in relation to the location of the Last Supper.  The account tells us that Jesus instructed his disciples to go find a man carrying water and follow him to the house he enters.  There they would be welcomed to gather in an available upper room.  Did you ever stop to think how this happened?  The bottom line is,  there was likely no strange miracle, but rather the foresight and prearrangement of Jesus himself.  The point?  Jesus knew by Scripture that his time had come and set up his last meal and time of fellowship ahead of time.  This shows us how much he cared for those who were with him.

The resounding theme of the entire Last Supper evening was Jesus’ thoughtful, heartfelt and wise care for his followers.  Here he was facing a night of unfair accusations, scourging and mocking, and his most pressing thoughts and actions were focused on others.  We all know about the tender and humble lesson Jesus taught by washing his followers' feet, but do we all know and remember that Judas, his betrayer, was there and had his feet washed also?  Stop and think a moment about the kind of character and heart one would need to possess to be able to genuinely wash the feet of the person bent on betraying you.

Another profound aspect of that fateful evening was how Jesus painstakingly prepared his followers for the coming betrayal.  Until you combine all four of the Gospel accounts of this evening into one narrative, it is impossible to appreciate the meticulous care Jesus gives to revealing the betrayer’s identity to his faithful followers.  Further, the four combined Gospels give us insight into how Jesus gave Judas every opportunity to see the rewards of faithfulness and the folly of betrayal.

Check out our April 15, 2019 podcast, “What Happened at the Last Supper?” for more.  The story comes alive as we walk through the details of not only what happened, but HOW it all happened as well.  Following the thinking and actions of Jesus with his disciples on that night brings a new level of appreciation for our Master’s character and sacrifice.  What could be better than that?

Theme Scripture: John 14:6

Jesus had an amazing way of saying a lot with few words. Jesus had a mission – he spoke about it, lived it and taught its principles. A major part of that mission was to open the way of "sonship" to the Father. Jesus told us he IS the way to the Father and he also IS the Truth. What does that mean? How could he BE the truth? Stay with us as we try and reveal just what he was talking about.
