A few weeks ago we began a conversation about racism and its origins. We talked about the mythical “Curse of Ham” which led to a mythical subduing of the black race. All of that said, we also looked at some history and effects of racism over the last 1500 years and asked plainly, does God show any kind of a racist approach to humanity? This week we want to continue looking at this difficult and sensitive subject through the lens of scriptural understanding and truth.

Racism – it is one of the hardest, most emotional and divisive subjects in our present culture. Understanding what it means, where it came from and how to deal with it are some of the many pressing questions that surround this issue. One of the utterly false reasonings that helped to provoke our modern day racial experience is “The Curse of Ham." What does it mean, where did it come from and how do we know that it is wrong? Is Slavery Acceptable to God?

We are fortunate to live in a country where the stated core belief is that all men are created equal. With such a basis, it is theoretically much easier to identify and condemn the domination of one over another against their will. Yet, slavery in many forms not only has existed for most all of history, it continues to exist in this age of enlightenment. The Bible is full of examples of slavery and full of God’s seeming acceptance of this practice. So, does God support the idea of slavery? Did God Ever Sanction Slavery?

If we look back throughout all of the recorded history of mankind, there are a number of themes that seem to continually reoccur. One of those themes is the rulership of some men over others. That theme in many cultures took a downward spiral and over time ended up as one of the greatest travesties in the history of the human race – slavery. Today, we look at such a practice and shake our heads in sorrow and disbelief at the inhumanity with which we have treated one another. In the midst of this, there looms a very important question – the Bible gives us a recorded history of ruler-ship, domination and slavery – the question is; did God or does God EVER sanction slavery - that inhuman treatment of another human being?
