Thanksgiving! It is a word that for most conjures up images of a holiday – as a matter of fact, it was this past Thursday. It conjures up food, family and friends, it conjures up overeating, football, and a day off; and hopefully, it conjures up...well, hopefully it conjures up thanksgiving! You know, the act of giving thanks – the act of gratitude. Now, with that somewhat novel thought of actual gratitude in our minds, we need to focus on the recipient of this gratitude. Stay with us as we talk about true heart-felt gratitude and the life-changing results of giving such gratitude!
There are some things that most everyone has in common. One of those things is our collective desire to celebrate. Granted, what we celebrate and the ways that we choose to celebrate are as varied as the seasons, but the desire to celebrate is a common thread. Today is one of those days where lots of people celebrate. It is Halloween and, believe it or not, it is not only the second most commercialized holiday in America, only being outspent by Christmas, half of all homes in America are decorated for the occasion. What is Halloween anyway? Where did it come from and what is the secret of its popularity? Stay with us as we examine some history, some tradition and the Bible!
Today is a day unique in America, for history tells us that it was 234 years ago on this day that a group of men gathered in Philadelphia and approved the final draft of a declaration that would dramatically change their lives and eventually change the world. That Declaration of Independence would mark America as a symbol of liberty and freedom across the globe to which people from the farthest corners of the world would line up to be a part of. We want to look at the value of freedom as well as the role that God has played in America.
Here we are, nearing the end of another June. This can mean a number of different things...kids are getting out of school for the summer – some are graduating; basketball and hockey have ended and baseball season is in full swing. Summer is officially beginning (tomorrow as a matter of fact). Yes, June is a pretty pivotal month... did I mention Father’s Day? Today is Father’s Day and in spite of all those other things happening in June, we are going to take this day’s program and focus on fatherhood – its responsibilities, joys, sorrows, pitfalls and victories. What makes a dad? Stay with us and let’s find out!
Today is a day of special significance, for it is the national holiday we know as Mother’s Day. It is a day set aside to honor and respect the hardest working and most under-appreciated member of our family – mom. It is on this day that we give the cards, the chocolates, the balloons, the special meal, the phone calls, the flowers and the pampering to the moms in our lives...funny thing, it is on the other 364 days of the year that they give us all of those kinds of things. Seems like it would warrant a “Mother’s Week” or a “Mother’s Month,” but I digress. Stay with us as we honor the most sacred institution of motherhood, with thoughts, Scriptures and music!
Sometimes, one life makes all the difference. Sometimes, all it takes is a mission, a lofty mission and a calling – a calling to do that which has never been done before and in so doing the mission is accomplished and the world is changed. Such a life was lived some 2,000 years ago. The mission and the calling compelled that life to change the course of humanity forever. It is this life, this mission and this calling that we honor today – Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior who gave his life so we might have life and is now raised to power on high!
Well, the day has come and gone. We got to once again experience Santa and reindeer, decorated trees and candy canes, presents, food, family, football, music, the trimmings, the trappings, the Grinch. Now that it is all said and done, let’s look back for a few minutes. In our celebration of Christmas, did we really celebrate the truest meaning of the day, or was that put aside? Well, we want to make sure the “reason for the season” was not forgotten – so, sit back, relax, and walk with us as we focus on the Real Christmas!
So, how’d you do? Did you eat a lot? Watch some football? Hang out with family? It was nice to have a day off, wasn’t it? Now, we can get on with the business of really preparing for Christmas – you know, the presents, the decorations, Santa, the specials on TV – all that stuff. Wait a minute! What just happened here? I know we all had the experience of the Thanksgiving holiday this past Thursday, but my question to you is this – did we CELEBRATE the Thanksgiving holiday? Do we even know what the Thanksgiving holiday is supposed to be about? Stay with us this morning as we look into a little history, and spend a lot of time on the concept of thanksgiving, and who we ought to focus it on…
Last night was it – Halloween – the night where in many cases, kids are front and center – they dress up in all kinds of scary or funny costumes, go out and “trick or treat” for candy. This is our American tradition. My questions are these – do we know what is it all based on? Does Halloween’s basis even matter? What is it about death that we find so fascinating? What does the Bible say about all of this? Stay with us as we look into Halloween, death, candy and tradition.
Halloween is coming. This is the time of year when we are inundated with movies, messages and advertisements that focus on death, the occult, witchcraft and all things spooky. It is the time of year when we are more willing to be scared as a part of our being entertained. We are going to focus on just one part of this phenomenon, the part that deals with witchcraft. Witchcraft is real – there are many forms of it and again we will focus in on one primarily, that which is called Wicca. Wicca is what is known as “white witchcraft,” and it has standards of behavior that teach to harm no one. So, if this is the case, is Wicca “bad?” Stay with us as we look into Wicca – what it is based on, how it works and what our reactions should be.
