Can Souls “Cross Over” on Halloween?

So, what is Halloween about anyway? Is it all about the costumes, the candy and the parties? Or is Halloween all about the dead? Is it all about communication with the spirit world, fire festivals and the dark arts? Can dead souls really “cross-over” the boundary of our physical world on this unique night? What is real and what is not? Where did this all start and what has it become? How Bad Can White Witchcraft Be?

In just a few days the costumes will come out, the candy will be distributed, the parties will roar on! The ghosts, the goblins, the skeletons – the superheroes, the princesses, the ballerinas – all will engage in a happy celebration of Halloween – ironically the night where pagan tradition says the veil between the spirit world and our world is thinnest and therefore can be crossed by evil spirits…great! Trick or Treat – Really?

So, it’s fall and once again we are all gearing up for the big holiday. You know the one – it’s the holiday where kids rule and get stuff, where everyone suddenly seems to be in a giving mood and for one night anyway, freely gives to anyone who passes by. It is the holiday where adults can be more like children and all seem to be willing to step out of their normal roles. Yes, it is that jolly holiday called Halloween! Halloween – you know, the night when darkness, death and horror are center stage and evil is king! Okay, so, which is it? Is Halloween a good holiday or a bad one? What should we do with it?

Why Do We Celebrate Death and Witchcraft?

The time has come. The time when candy becomes a dietary staple, kids stay up and are out late running throughout neighborhoods collecting candy, disguised as anything from Ninja Turtles, to Frankenstein to princesses to monsters to political figures, ghosts and aliens. If you are a kid, it is pure fun. But the older you get, the darker the source of the fun. At some point for many, this fun now takes on stories of death, darkness and devilry. Obviously, we are talking about Halloween. What is it about this holiday that brings out so much that seems so sinister? Stay with us – you may be surprised!

Can White Witchcraft be Good?

Boo!! It’s that time of year when ghosts, goblins, skeletons, witches and sorcerers overrun not only our neighborhoods but much of the TV and movie industry as well. Soon they will all go back into hibernation until next year - all except witches, that is. Witchcraft, particularly that practiced as "Wicca," is a particularly burgeoning part of our culture, growing especially among young people. Should this be a problem? After all, Wicca practices “white” witchcraft, so it’s nothing to worry about – or is it? Stay with us as we look into Wicca – its origin, its practices its influence and of course, what the Bible says about such things...

Should Halloween Make Us Happy?

There are some things that most everyone has in common. One of those things is our collective desire to celebrate. Granted, what we celebrate and the ways that we choose to celebrate are as varied as the seasons, but the desire to celebrate is a common thread. Today is one of those days where lots of people celebrate. It is Halloween and, believe it or not, it is not only the second most commercialized holiday in America, only being outspent by Christmas, half of all homes in America are decorated for the occasion. What is Halloween anyway? Where did it come from and what is the secret of its popularity? Stay with us as we examine some history, some tradition and the Bible!

Is Death Real?

Last night was it – Halloween – the night where in many cases, kids are front and center – they dress up in all kinds of scary or funny costumes, go out and “trick or treat” for candy. This is our American tradition. My questions are these – do we know what is it all based on? Does Halloween’s basis even matter? What is it about death that we find so fascinating? What does the Bible say about all of this? Stay with us as we look into Halloween, death, candy and tradition.

What About Witchcraft?

Halloween is coming. This is the time of year when we are inundated with movies, messages and advertisements that focus on death, the occult, witchcraft and all things spooky. It is the time of year when we are more willing to be scared as a part of our being entertained. We are going to focus on just one part of this phenomenon, the part that deals with witchcraft. Witchcraft is real – there are many forms of it and again we will focus in on one primarily, that which is called Wicca. Wicca is what is known as “white witchcraft,” and it has standards of behavior that teach to harm no one. So, if this is the case, is Wicca “bad?” Stay with us as we look into Wicca – what it is based on, how it works and what our reactions should be.

Should We Fear Witchcraft?

In just a few days it will be here - the day, or night as the case may be, when children are set loose (with guidance of course!) into their neighborhoods dressed as Spiderman, princesses, ghosts, monsters, Darth Vader and Harry Potter just to name a few. Their mission? Candy! Lot’s of it, to be given upon the utterance of those familiar words – “Trick or Treat!” Now, we all probably know that Halloween’s origins are not quite so innocent, but do we ever really think about the implications of the realities that may surround this event? On this program we will attempt to examine one aspect of that reality – namely, witchcraft. It is alive and flourishing all around us, albeit in many different forms. The most popular of these form is “Wicca” and that is where we will spend most of our time – so stay with us as we address an important question – Witchcraft is here– should we fear it?
